Chapter 5 - Ashes of the EmpireThe dismantling of Hale Maritime was not a quiet corporate restructuring; it was a public execution.

Within forty-eight hours of the data leak, federal investigators seized every asset, froze every offshore account, and slapped embargoes on every cargo ship bearing the Hale insignia from Boston to Rotterdam. The media descended upon Hale Maritime Tower like vultures, broadcasting live feeds of box-toting executives being escorted out by armed federal marshals.
Declan Hale did not run. He did not hire a high-priced defense attorney to stall the inevitable.
Instead, he sat in a federal interrogation room on the fourteenth floor of the John J. Moakley Federal Courthouse, wearing a simple black shirt, his injured arm bound in a white medical sling.
Across the stainless-steel table sat Special Agent Miller of the Department of Justice, looking through a thick dossier filled with financial wire transfers, shipping manifests, and audio transcripts.
"Your cooperation is unprecedented, Mr. Hale," Agent Miller said, closing the folder and leaning back. "You've handed us every transaction, every bribe, and every illicit shipping route your family operated for three decades. You’re looking at corporate conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and environmental terrorism charges. Realistically, you could face twenty years."
Declan stared calmly at the Agent. "I’m aware of the numbers."
"And yet, you haven't asked for a plea deal."
"Because I don't want one," Declan replied evenly. "My family built an empire on blood, extortion, and poison. It deserves to be dismantled down to the foundation. Every ship, every dock, every dollar. Let the courts take it all."
Agent Miller raised an eyebrow, studying him with professional curiosity. "And Miss Mitchell?"
Declan’s expression softened slightly for the first time. "Sarah is under medical protection at Massachusetts General. The thallium levels in her blood are dropping. The specialists say the child is strong. She’s going to make it."
"She’s also the one who executed the digital breach that brought down the entire operation," Miller noted. "The DOJ is granting her full immunity in exchange for her testimony regarding Thomas Callahan and the murder of Arthur Vance."
"Good," Declan said. "She earned it."
"One last question, Declan," Agent Miller said, leaning forward. "Thomas Callahan claims you knew about your father’s murder all along. He claims you were grooming the empire to take over the illicit operations."
Declan stood up, resting his good hand on the back of the metal chair.

"Thomas spent fourteen years believing that loyalty meant covering up crimes," Declan said quietly. "He was wrong. Real loyalty means having the courage to burn it all down so something clean can finally grow in the ashes."
He turned and walked toward the heavy steel door, ready to face whatever sentence the law demanded.
