Chapter 4 - THE DRAKE HOTEL MIRACLEThe Drake Hotel ballroom was dazzling. Crystal chandeliers cast golden light across velvet tablecloths, silver cutlery, and a breakfast spread that looked like a royal feast. For Sophie, who had spent her life counting every slice of bread, walking into the room was like stepping inside a magical snow globe.

Rose ate happily, sitting beside Thomas, who watched her every move with fierce devotion.

Marianne sat stiffly at the edge of her chair, stirring a cup of coffee. The warmth of the room was intoxicating, but the underlying tension in her chest refused to ease. She knew people like Thomas Whitmore. They lived in a stratosphere of wealth, power, and untouchable security. Once breakfast was over, they would return to their mansions, and Marianne would return to her Oak Street apartment with its broken heater and empty fridge.

"You haven't touched your food, Marianne," Thomas said softly, leaning across the table.

"I’m just... processing," Marianne admitted, looking down at her cup. "Your mother needs care, Mr. Whitmore. Real care. Not just a blanket on a sofa."

"I know," Thomas sighed, running a hand through his dark hair. "Her Alzheimer’s is getting worse. The specialists said I need a full-time private medical estate for her, but she hates institutions. She wanders whenever she feels trapped." He paused, looking directly at Marianne. "Which is why I have a proposition for you."

Marianne stiffened. "I’m a housekeeper, Mr. Whitmore, not a nurse."

"Not a nurse," Thomas corrected gently. "A companion. My estate in Lake Forest is massive—empty, quiet, and secure. I need someone with your heart, your patience, and your integrity to live there, help look after my mother, and keep the household running. You’ll have a permanent salary, full medical coverage for you and Sophie, and a home where the heater never clicks off."

Marianne stared at him, stunned. "You want us to move into your mansion?"

"I want my mother to be safe," Thomas said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an unexpected vulnerability. "And I want you and Sophie to have a life where you never have to count carrots again."

Before Marianne could answer, Thomas’s phone buzzed violently on the table.

He glanced at the screen, and his expression instantly darkened. It was a text from his head of security: “Sir, photos of you, your mother, and Mrs. Cole leaving the Oak Street apartment have just been leaked to the tabloids. Harrison Vance is claiming you’ve hidden a liability and are unfit to lead the board meeting tomorrow.”
