Chapter 5 - THE TABLOID STORMBy evening, the digital screens across Chicago were flashing headlines:

“HEIR TO EMPIRE COMPROMISED? THOMAS WHITMORE’S SECRET ENCOUNTER WITH IMPOVERISHED STRANGER.” “INSIDER TRADING OR PRIVATE CHARITY? THE MYSTERY BEHIND THE OAK STREET APARTMENT.”

Harrison Vance had twisted the narrative completely, painting Thomas’s search for his mother as a secret meeting with shady individuals to funnel corporate funds. The board of directors was in an uproar, demanding an emergency emergency meeting for the following morning at 9:00 AM.

Thomas paced his private office at Whitmore Enterprises, his jaw clenched so tightly it ached.

Marianne sat on the velvet sofa in the corner, holding Sophie’s hand. The little girl was fast asleep, wrapped in a plush throw blanket, completely unaware of the corporate war raging around them.

"I am so sorry, Marianne," Thomas said, stopping his pacing to look at her. "Because you helped my mother, you’ve been dragged into the crosshairs of a corporate coup. Vance wants my seat as CEO, and he’s using you and Sophie as weapons against me."

Marianne stood up, walking over to stand facing the billionaire. The fear that had initially gripped her was gone, replaced by the fierce, unyielding resilience of a mother who had survived the worst life could throw at her.

"I didn't ask for your money, Mr. Whitmore, and I didn't ask for your fame," Marianne said, her voice steady and clear. "But I won't let anyone make me feel ashamed for helping an old woman in the snow. If your board wants to judge you for showing basic human decency, then maybe your company isn't worth saving."

Thomas stared at her, utterly captivated. In a world full of sycophants, lawyers, and cutthroat investors who only spoke the language of profit, Marianne Cole spoke the language of a human soul.

"You're right," Thomas whispered, a sudden, fierce smile breaking across his face. "My father built this company on steel and grit. It’s time we reminded the board what real strength looks like."
