Chapter 2 - The Empty Nest and the Unlocked DoorThe front door clicked open, the sound echoing through the unnervingly silent house. Derek strode in first, his posture rigid, a smug, entitled smirk plastered across his face. Behind him trailed his sister, Chloe, scrolling mindlessly on her phone, complaining about how long they had been forced to wait outside while Skylar supposedly "learned her lesson."

"Skylar! Stop hiding, you're only making it worse for yourself," Derek called out, kicking off his shoes. "You think walking out of the hospital was brave? You're nothing without my income, and you know it. Now, where is the card? Chloe has a flight to Paris tomorrow, and her boutique collection isn't going to fund itself."

Silence answered him. No sound of footsteps running down the stairs. No smell of dinner cooking on the stove. No apologetic voice trembling with submission.

Chloe frowned, lowering her phone. "Why is it so cold in here? And why does it smell like... bleach?"

Derek frowned, marching into the kitchen. The coffee maker was cold. The counters were scrubbed clean. But sitting dead-center on the polished mahogany dining table were two items illuminated by the fading afternoon sun:

A platinum-and-diamond wedding band. And a crisp, white-backed document bearing the bold letterhead of the Metropolitan Police Department.

Derek walked over slowly, a knot tightening in his stomach. He picked up the document. His eyes scanned the official terminology: Assault in the Second Degree, Chemical Burns, Intentional Infliction of Bodily Harm, Evidence Preservation, Restraining Order Pending.

"What... what is this?" Derek muttered, his voice dropping an octave.

Chloe leaned over his shoulder, her eyes widening in horror as she read the police report. "She... she called the cops? Are you kidding me? She actually went to the police over a little coffee spill?!"

"It wasn't a spill, Chloe," a cold, computerized voice echoed from the hallway.

Derek whipped around. Standing by the doorway was Detective Vance, accompanied by two uniform officers. Vance didn't smile. He held up a digital tablet displaying an official warrant.

"Derek Evans, you are under arrest for felony assault, aggravated domestic violence, and coercion," Detective Vance stated, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Derek staggered back, dropping the police report. "No, wait! You don't understand! It was an accident! A domestic argument! She's my wife—she can't do this!"

"She didn't just do it, Mr. Evans," Vance said sharply, as the heavy steel cuffs clicked around Derek’s wrists. "She documented every single bone-chilling detail. And trust me... your control era is officially over."
