Chapter 6 - Sunrise Over the North ShoreDawn painted the Chicago skyline in brilliant strokes of gold, crimson, and slate grey.

Outside the iron gates of the Marino estate, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the fog rolling off Lake Michigan. Three black SUVs sat abandoned with slashed tires, their occupants already secured and zip-tied by Silas’s loyal enforcers who had finally broken through the external communication jams.

Inside the grand library, the air smelled of fresh coffee and expensive leather.

Mara sat in a velvet armchair near the tall arched windows, holding a warm mug between her palms. Poppy was fast asleep curled up on the sofa beside her, her head resting on a velvet pillow, still clutching her stuffed rabbit.

Silas stood by the desk. His white dress shirt had been replaced by a clean black suit jacket, though white bandages peeked out from beneath his cuffs where the industrial cord had bitten into his skin.

Graham Voss and his co-conspirators were currently locked in the very basement cells Graham had intended for Silas, awaiting a very quiet, very permanent tribunal.

The heavy mahogany doors opened, and Marcus, Silas’s head of security, stepped into the room.

“The board members have arrived, Boss,” Marcus reported, his face grim. “They’re waiting in the formal dining room. They think they’re here to sign the emergency transfer of authority to Graham.”

Silas picked up a single black leather folder from the desk—the exact same folder Mara had seen eighteen hours earlier.

“Let them in,” Silas said calmly.

Marcus nodded and stepped aside.

A moment later, five senior executives and financial partners of the Marino enterprise filed into the room, whispering nervously among themselves. They stopped dead in their tracks when they saw Silas standing upright, looking every bit the ruthless mastermind they had spent the night secretly mourning.

“Silas?” stammered Arthur Pendelton, the senior board director, turning pale. “We were told... we were told you were missing. Where is Graham?”

Silas didn't answer immediately. He walked slowly around the mahogany desk, placed the black folder down, and looked at each man in turn.

“Graham had a sudden change of heart,” Silas said smoothly, his voice slicing through the tense silence like a razor. “He realized his talents were better suited elsewhere. Permanently.”

Arthur swallowed hard, his eyes darting to the closed doors behind Silas. “Then... the emergency transfer?”

Silas opened the folder, revealing the papers inside. Every single page had been neatly crossed out in black permanent marker. At the bottom of the page, where a signature was supposed to go, someone had drawn a small, crude crown using yellow highlighter.

“There is no emergency transfer,” Silas said softly, resting his palms on the wood. “The Marino empire isn't going anywhere. And neither am I.”
