Chapter 1: The Debt of the Savannah

The massive male lion stood so close Emily could feel the heat radiating from his golden fur. She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the agonizing tear of teeth into flesh. She thought of her family, her unfulfilled dreams, and the absolute cruelty of the men who had left her here to die.

But instead of a lethal bite, she felt a massive, rough tongue lick the tears streaming down her face.

Emily gasped, her eyes flying open. The lion’s amber gaze locked onto hers. It wasn't the look of a cold-blooded killer; it was a look of intense, ancient recognition. That’s when she saw it—a jagged, silver scar running down the lion's left shoulder.

The Realization: Three years ago, during her first week on the job, Emily had risked her life to free a young, mangled cub from a wire snare. She had spent all night keeping watch over him until the veterinary team arrived. She had named him Ashe.

Ashe was no longer a defenseless cub. He was the King of this pride.

The great beast turned his back to Emily, facing the dark savannah, and let out a roar so deafening it shook the ground beneath her feet. The rest of the pride immediately fanned out, forming a protective, impenetrable wall around the tree. They weren't there to eat her. They were guarding her.

As the cold night deepened, the lionesses lay down around the base of the tree, keeping Emily warm with their body heat. Emily wept, not from terror, but from a profound awe. But as the first rays of dawn broke over the horizon, the sound of a distant, roaring engine shattered the peace.

The poachers were coming back to film their gruesome victory.
