Chapter 3 - The Trap is SetThe next evening, Villa Moretti transformed from a grand residence into a theater of calculated paranoia.

The twelve mafia families returned, but this time, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of impending betrayal. Armed guards lined every corridor, their automatic rifles held at the ready. The chandeliers hummed with tension.

In the center of the grand dining hall, a single empty chair sat between Don Ricci and Matteo Rossi.

Matteo was a slick, charismatic man in his late forties, wearing a tailored charcoal suit and a diamond pinky ring. He smiled smoothly, sipping scotch, but a faint twitch in his left eyelid betrayed his inner nerves. He knew Vivian was locked in the basement. He knew the rabbit had been found. What he didn't know was how much Alessandro actually knew.

And then, the double doors at the end of the hall swung open.

A hush fell over the room so heavy you could hear the champagne bubbles popping in crystal flutes.

I walked down the grand staircase wearing a midnight-blue silk gown that Luca’s team had miraculously sourced in my exact size within three hours. My hair was swept up in an elegant twist, and my posture was straight. Holding my hand tightly was Emma, wearing a matching blue velvet dress, clutching her repaired blue rabbit under her arm.

Walking right beside us, with one hand resting protectively on the small of my back, was Alessandro Moretti.

Gasps rippled through the seated capos. Wives dropped their fans; hardened killers leaned forward in disbelief. The ruthless, untouchable king of Milan was escorting a former housekeeper and her three-year-old daughter down the aisle of power as if we were royalty.

Matteo Rossi’s glass cracked slightly in his grip, a tiny spiderweb of fractures spreading across the crystal.

“Welcome, gentlemen,” Alessandro’s voice boomed across the silent hall. He guided us to the seats reserved directly beside his own, pulling out my chair himself before taking his seat at the head of the table.

“Alessandro,” Matteo said, forcing a smooth, oily smile as he raised his glass. “A most… unusual guest list tonight. I see you’ve decided to trade your high-society fiancée for domestic help. Quite the downgrade, wouldn't you say?”

The temperature in the room plummeted below freezing.

Several capos winced, looking down at their plates. No one spoke to Alessandro Moretti like that—especially not a man with a secret to hide.

Alessandro didn't flinch. He picked up his silver butter knife, rolling it slowly between his fingers.

“Domestic help, Matteo?” Alessandro’s voice was dangerously soft. “Strange words coming from a man whose uncle runs a charity parish that doubles as a post office for dead terrorists.”

Matteo’s smile didn’t drop, but the color vanished from his face entirely. “I haven’t the faintest idea what you’re talking about, Alessandro. Are you losing your mind over a maid?”

“Let’s find out,” Alessandro said calmly. He snapped his fingers.

Luca stepped out from the shadows carrying a silver tray. Resting in the center of the tray was Emma’s blue rabbit, illuminated by a single spotlight from above.

Matteo’s eyes locked onto the toy, and for a split second, his composure completely shattered. His hand shook so violently that scotch sloshed over the rim of his glass.

“That’s just a child’s toy,” Matteo laughed nervously, looking around the table for support from the other bosses. “Are we holding a trial for stuffed animals now? Has Moretti lost his grip on reality?”

“It’s not just a toy, Matteo,” I spoke up.

My voice startled even me. It was clear, steady, and cut through the murmurs of the room like a bell. I stood up slowly from my chair, looking directly into Matteo’s terrified eyes.

“It’s a delivery vehicle,” I continued, my heart pounding as I remembered every word Luca had taught me. “Stitched with Zurich nylon. Distributed through St. Jude’s. Handed to a mother in District Seven who was desperate enough to take anything to keep her baby warm. You thought poor people were invisible, Matteo. You thought we wouldn't notice a black thread on blue wool because you think money makes you blind to the details.”

Matteo slammed his glass down onto the table, shattering the crystal.

“Bitch!” Matteo roared, leaping to his feet and reaching inside his jacket for a hidden pistol. “You don't know who you’re messing with!”

He never cleared his holster.
