Chapter 12

The transition of the Moretti empire into a 100% legitimate multinational conglomerate sent shockwaves through the federal intelligence agencies and rival gangs alike. The FBI’s organized crime task force spent months trying to find a loophole, a hidden drug stash, or an offshore shell company that violated federal racketeering laws.

They found nothing. Every single dollar was accounted for, tied to real estate, municipal infrastructure, and legitimate maritime shipping.

One rainy Thursday evening, Luke walked into my office uninvited, tossing a thick federal intelligence brief onto my desk.

“Special Agent Miller and his strike force officially closed their active file on us this morning,” Luke announced, shaking rain droplets off his leather jacket. “They combed through three years of financial ledgers and came up completely empty-handed. They’re classifying Moretti Holdings as a clean corporate entity.”

I closed the folder without opening it. “Good. Tell our legal team to release the public audit statements to the press tomorrow morning. Let the city see exactly where our capital is going—funding public clinics, urban renewal, and youth centers.”

Luke crossed his arms, looking at me with a rare glint of profound respect. “You know, five years ago, if someone told me Danny Moretti would turn the most feared syndicate in the Midwest into a philanthropic corporation, I would have put a bullet in their head.”

“People change, Luke,” I said quietly. “Or maybe they just finally remember who they were before the world tried to break them.”
