Chapter 4 - The Departure and the Threat

The silence that followed my ultimatum was suffocating. For ten agonizing seconds, nobody moved. Parker stood frozen between two worlds—the coddling, toxic dynasty of his mother and the reality of his own broken marriage.

Alana saw him hesitating. She knew her grip on her son was slipping.

“If you stay with her, Parker, after the way she has treated your flesh and blood, you are no son of mine!” Alana hissed, her voice trembling with venomous manipulation. “Choose! Her and that bastard child, or your real family!”

It was the ultimate guilt trip—the same weapon she had used to control every major decision in Parker’s life since he was a boy.

Parker flinched. He looked back at me, his eyes filled with a pathetic mix of guilt, fear, and weakness. He made his choice.

“I’m sorry, Clarissa,” Parker whispered, his shoulders slumping in defeat. “You’ve gone too far. You’re turning this into a war. If you’re going to throw my mother and sister out into the street, I’m going with them.”

A cold wave of relief washed over me. I felt no sadness—only absolute clarity. The dead weight was finally cutting itself loose.

“Pack your bags, Parker,” I said evenly. “You have forty minutes.”

Without another word, Parker turned on his heel and stomped up the stairs, slamming doors as he went. Alana and Ellie exchanged a fleeting, triumphant glance, believing that Parker’s loyalty to them would ultimately force me to back down. They still didn't understand. They thought I was bluffing.

True to my word, at exactly 2:30 PM, the heavy mahogany front door swung wide open, and three suitcases hit the gravel driveway with a loud thud.

Parker, Alana, and Ellie stood on the porch under the blazing summer sun. Alana was wearing a mask of furious indignation, Ellie was recording me on her phone to post a sob story on social media, and Parker looked like a man walking toward his own execution.

“You will hear from my lawyer by Monday morning, Clarissa,” Parker snarled, his voice shaking with false bravado as he hoisted his duffel bag over his shoulder. “You’re going to pay alimony, you’re going to split this house, and you’ll regret the day you ever crossed my family.”

“File whatever you want, Parker,” I replied, stepping out onto the threshold and holding my phone up so they could all see the screen. “By the way, I just forwarded that audio file to your business partners at the firm, as well as your personal email. I figured they’d love to know what kind of fraudulent, manipulative schemes your mother and sister run behind closed doors—using your name as leverage.”

Parker’s face went completely white. “You… you didn't.”

“Watch me,” I said with a thin smile.

I stepped backward into the hallway, reached for the smart-panel on the wall, and punched in the master override code.

“Security system armed. All exterior doors locked,” the robotic voice chimed smoothly through the house.

With a heavy, mechanical click, the deadbolts slid into place. I locked my eyes on Parker through the reinforced glass window of the front door, watched him scramble backward in horror, and then pulled the heavy velvet curtains shut.

They were gone. But the real battle was only just beginning.
