Chapter 1 - The Blood on the DiamondThe air in the private suite grew so thin you could slice it with a surgical blade.

Vanessa Bellini stood frozen two feet from the bed, her diamond-encrusted fingers twitching at her sides. The pristine ivory coat she wore looked suddenly absurd against the stark, violent reality of Dominic Moretti waking from the dead. Her sleek, dark hair was pinned back with severe perfection, mirroring the cold calculations happening behind her amber eyes.
She looked at Grace Bennett—the exhausted, bruised nurse whose hand Dominic was still refusing to let go of—and then back at Dominic.
“Dominic, darling, you’re delirious,” Vanessa forced a brittle, high-society laugh, stepping forward and trying to slide her manicured hand over his uninjured arm. “The smoke inhalation, the trauma... your brain is playing tricks on you. That girl is nobody. Just a floor nurse who didn't know her place.”
Dominic didn't flinch. He didn't even look at Vanessa’s hand.
Instead, his gaze—steel-gray, cold, and carrying the weight of a dozen executions—remained locked on Grace. The monitor beside the bed beeped in a steady, aggressive rhythm, matching the slow, terrifying rise of his chest.
“My mind is clearer than it has been in five years, Vanessa,” Dominic said. His voice was a rasping scrape of sandpaper, yet every syllable dropped into the room like a lead weight. “And she is not ‘nobody.’ She is the only person in this building who didn't try to kill me.”
The armed guards near the door collectively stopped breathing.
Vanessa’s face drained of color, her foundation suddenly looking like a layer of chalk. “Kill you? Don't be absurd! It was a gas leak at the East River warehouse! The board of directors—the rivals—they planned it!”
“The board didn't know about the safehouse code,” Dominic whispered, his grip tightening fractionally on Grace's wrist. “And the only people who knew I was inspecting the shipment at midnight were my inner circle... and the woman who picked out the champagne for my celebration the night before.”
Vanessa stepped back as if she’d been struck. “Are you accusing me? After I sat by this hospital bed for twenty-four hours? After my father mobilized every judge in the city to protect your assets while you were unconscious?”
“Your father mobilized judges to seize my assets before my body was even cold,” Dominic corrected, a dark, humorless smirk twisting the corner of his bruised lips. He turned his head slowly toward Vanessa, his eyes narrowing to microscopic slits. “And you didn't sit by this bed. You sat in the waiting room rewriting my will, waiting for the doctor to pull the plug.”
“Lies!” Vanessa shrieked, the mask of cool aristocratic elegance cracking wide open. She turned to the head of security, her voice pitching into panic. “Get her out of here! Drag that nurse to the basement and throw her out on the street! Do it now!”
Not a single guard moved.
They looked at Dominic. They knew the law of the Moretti syndicate: He who hesitates is fed to the pigs.
“Touch her,” Dominic said softly, “and I will have your skin used to upholster my office chair before midnight.”
Silence descended again, heavier than before.
Grace finally found her voice, her throat raw from the shift. Her hand trembled slightly within his, not out of fear of Dominic, but from the sheer, overwhelming magnitude of the war she had just stumbled into.
“Mr. Moretti,” Grace said quietly, her blue-gray eyes meeting his direct gaze. “Your vitals are crashing. If you keep talking, your stitches will rupture.”
Dominic let out a low, gravelly chuckle that turned into a wince of sharp pain. He looked at her with something akin to genuine awe.
“Let them rupture,” he muttered. Then, his eyes darted back to the doorway where the little boy from the trauma bay had briefly been wheeled past forty-eight hours ago. “Did you hide him?”
Grace’s breath hitched. She gave a microscopic nod.
“Good,” Dominic murmured, his eyelids fluttering dangerously. The blood loss and the sheer trauma were dragging him back under. But before the darkness took him again, he squeezed her hand with a final, unbreakable vow. “Because if they find that boy... they find the truth about why my warehouse burned down. And they find out who survived.”
His eyes rolled back, and the monitors shrieked a chaotic warning as Dominic Moretti slipped back into unconsciousness.
Vanessa lunged forward, her face twisted in venomous fury. “What boy? What is he talking about? Nurse, you tell me right now, or I swear to God I will strip your nursing license, evict you from your apartment, and ruin your life before the sun sets!”

Grace pulled her hand free from Dominic’s slackened grip. She straightened her wrinkled scrubs, wiped a smudge of dried blood from her cheek, and looked straight into Vanessa Bellini’s terrified, diamond-wrapped face.
“You’ll have to find him first, Ms. Bellini,” Grace said calmly, turning her back on the furious fiancée and walking steadily toward the exit.
