Chapter 4 - The Gala and the Ghost from the PastFriday night arrived.

Ethan had asked Hannah to meet him downtown near the financial district, promising a surprise. He had shaved his beard, slicked back his hair, and slipped back into a bespoke charcoal Brioni suit—the uniform of Ethan Caldwell, CEO.
He waited near the entrance of the grand ballroom where the annual Charlotte Business Council Charity Gala was taking place.
Hannah stepped out of a cab, wearing a simple, elegant emerald-green dress that made Ethan’s breath catch in his throat. She looked around, bewildered by the valet stands, the luxury cars, and the flashing cameras.
“Ethan?” she asked, her eyes widening as she looked him up and down. “What... what is this? Where are we?”
Before Ethan could answer, the heavy glass doors of the ballroom swung open.
Stepping out onto the marble steps was none other than Vanessa Whitmore, draped in diamonds, laughing alongside a group of elite society figures.
Vanessa froze when she saw Ethan standing there in his custom suit.
Her eyes darted to Hannah, standing beside him in a simple dress, and a sharp, cruel smile spread across Vanessa’s face.
“Well, well, well,” Vanessa purred, walking right up to them, her voice carrying across the courtyard. “Look who crawled back out from under a rock. Ethan, darling! I heard you went completely off the grid after our breakup. And who’s this? Did you pick up a charity case from the soup kitchen to make yourself feel noble?”
Hannah’s face went completely blank. She looked from Vanessa, dripping in jewels, back to Ethan in his thousand-dollar suit.
The silence stretched like a snapping wire.
“Ethan?” Hannah whispered, her voice trembling. “What is she talking about?”
Ethan reached out, his hand shaking slightly. “Hannah, let me explain. I wanted to tell you—”
“Explain what?” Vanessa interrupted, laughing loudly. “That he’s Ethan Caldwell? The billionaire real estate tycoon? Honey, you didn't think a man worth nine figures actually lived in a shelter, did you? He’s been playing dress-up for months. It’s his little game to see who’s ‘authentic’ enough for him.”
Hannah stepped backward, the blood draining completely from her face.
The words echoed in her ears like a physical blow.
A game. Dress-up. Billionaire.

All the memories of sitting by her food cart, sharing a sandwich, talking about struggle and resilience, and telling him that people only judge others when they're empty inside—crashed down on her with brutal irony.
She had lectured a billionaire about humility while he was wearing a disguise to test her.
