Chapter 5 - The Emerald Dress Walks Away“Hannah, please,” Ethan pleaded, stepping forward, his heart hammering wildly in his chest. “It started as an experiment, yes. But everything I felt with you—everything I told you—was real. I swear to God, it was real.”

Hannah looked up at him. Her eyes weren't angry.
They were heartbroken. And worse, they were disappointed.
“You wanted to see if someone would be kind to a poor man,” Hannah said softly, her voice barely audible over the hum of the city traffic. “You wanted a safe little fairy tale where you held all the cards from the very beginning.”
“That’s not true—”
“It is true,” she whispered, shaking her head. “You tested me, Ethan. You walked into my life wearing a mask, letting me worry about you, letting me share what little I had, while you owned the sky scrapers we were looking at.”
“Hannah, wait—”
“Keep your money, Ethan,” she said, her voice breaking as a single tear slipped down her cheek. “And keep your games.”

Ethan stood frozen on the marble steps, the lights of the gala shining brightly behind him, while his entire world went completely dark.
