Chapter 1 - THE DISCOVERYVeronica Cruz waited until the heavy mahogany doors of Rory Starks’ study clicked shut. Down the hall, the sound of glass shattering echoed—Rory’s infamous temper exploding in isolation. The man who controlled New York’s shipping docks was crumbling, but Veronica knew that in this house, a moment’s hesitation could cost a life.

She slipped back into the nursery. The twins, Lily and Rose, were fast asleep from sheer emotional exhaustion. Between them lay the brown plush teddy bear, "Mr. Barnaby," gifted by Rory’s estranged sister, Susan, eight weeks ago—precisely when the 3:00 a.m. night terrors had begun.

Veronica approached the bed on quiet feet. She reached out to gently slip the bear away from Lily’s tiny grip. The moment her fingers brushed the plush fabric, a strange sensation shot up her forearm.

It wasn't soft. Underneath the synthetic fur, the bear felt dense, cold, and strangely heavy on the left side of its chest.

Veronica carried the bear to the attached private bathroom, soft soles noiseless against the marble. She locked the door, pulled a pair of heavy sewing shears from her apron pocket, and pressed the bear against the sink.

Her heart hammered against her ribs. If Rory caught her destroying his daughters' favorite toy, he would drop her body into the harbor before sunrise. But she had seen the way the girls flinched when they touched it—not like children clinging to a security blanket, but like prisoners forced to hold hot coal.

She plunged the blades into the bear's central seam and cut.

White polyester stuffing spilled out like fresh snow, but buried deep within the chest cavity was something that didn't belong in a child's bedroom: a matte-black metal cylinder wrapped in thin copper wiring, anchored to a small circuit board. On the face of the board, a tiny red LED digital screen glowed softly with a countdown timer: 02:58:14.

Veronica’s breath hitched. It was a dual-frequency acoustic oscillator paired with an ultra-low frequency (ULF) infrasound emitter.

Veronica wasn't just a maid. Three years ago, before her brother was killed by a rival cartel and she went into hiding under a false identity, she had worked as an acoustic technician for a defense contractor. She knew exactly what this device was. Infrasound waves—frequencies below 20 Hz—were invisible to the human ear, but they directly triggered the human amygdala, inducing severe panic, extreme nausea, phantom vibrations, and intolerable neurological pressure.

And every night at 3:00 a.m., the built-in timer was set to hit peak resonance.

The "buzzing monster" the twins screamed about wasn't a hallucination. It was a military-grade psychological torture device planted right between their heads while they slept.

Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed in the bedroom outside.

"Veronica?" Rory’s gravelly, lethal voice cut through the heavy door. "What are you still doing in here?"

May you like

Veronica’s hands shook as she grabbed a hand towel, desperately trying to wrap the gutted bear. "Just... cleaning up the basin, Mr. Starks," she called out, her voice barely steady.

The brass doorknob began to turn.
