Chapter 5 - THE BLOODLINE KEYThe underground vault beneath the Volkov estate was cold enough to frost breath in the air.

Rows of reinforced titanium shelving held centuries of ledgers, weapons, and ancestral treasures. At the very center stood a massive, wall-mounted steel safe bearing the insignia of the old Soviet banking cartel—a relic from an era before digital encryption, operated entirely by mechanical tumblers and a biometric optical scanner.
"The physical combination was lost when your father died," Alexei explained, standing beside Victoria as the heavy vault door groaned open. "The optical scanner requires a direct retinal and DNA match from a direct descendant of Arthur Chen. That's why Dmitri couldn't crack it. That's why Carol kept you isolated for years—she was trying to figure out how to harvest your biometrics without killing you."
Victoria stared at the glowing blue lens of the scanner, her stomach turning. "And you? Do you want the twenty million?"
Alexei turned to her, his gaze steady and unwavering. "If I wanted the bonds, Victoria, I could have strapped you to a chair and forced the scan on day one. I brought you here because Dmitri’s men tracked our digital footprint at the gala. They know you're the key. Within forty-eight hours, every assassin from Brooklyn to Moscow will be descending on this estate."
"Then let them come," Victoria said, a sudden, fierce spike of adrenaline cutting through her despair. She stood tall, wiping the remaining tears from her face. She was Quinn’s Diner’s toughest waitress; she wasn't going to cower like a trapped animal anymore. "If my father’s legacy is what's putting a target on my back, I want to see what's inside. Let's open the safe, Alexei."
Alexei stared at her for a long, silent moment, a slow, dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips. The approval in his eyes was unmistakable.
"That's my wife," he murmured.
He stepped aside. Victoria walked up to the heavy steel vault. She took a deep breath, pressing her eye to the optical lens while holding her thumb against the biometric pad.
BEEP.
A green light flashed. The internal gears ground together with a deafening, metallic shuck. The massive steel wheel spun outward, and the heavy door slowly swung open.
Inside, there were no stacks of cash or bearer bonds.
Instead, there was a single, worn leather journal, a silver pocket watch, and a microcassette labeled simply: For Victoria.
Victoria reached inside with trembling fingers and pulled out the cassette and the journal. She opened the diary to the first page, her eyes scanning her father’s familiar handwriting:
If you are reading this, Victoria, it means I am gone, and Alexei has found you. Trust no one in the Syndicate—not even the men closest to him. The betrayal came from inside the house.
Before she could read another word, the estate's emergency klaxons began to wail.

Red strobe lights flashed across the concrete walls. The heavy steel security door leading into the vault corridor slammed shut with an earth-shattering crash, sealing them inside.
"We've been breached," Alexei growled, his hand instantly dropping to his holster as he drew his Glock. "Dmitri’s men. They bypassed the outer perimeter."
