Chapter 8 - THE NEW DYNASTYThree weeks later, the Mediterranean sun beat down warm and golden against the white stucco walls of a private villa overlooking the Amalfi coast.

The Mediterranean breeze carried the scent of salt, lemons, and blooming bougainvillea. There were no armed guards at the gate, no emergency klaxons, no ticking time bombs or forged contracts.

In the center of the terrace, a small, secure fire burned in a copper bowl.

Victoria stood by the stone balustrade, wearing a simple white sundress, watching the blue waves crash against the rocks below. In her hand, she held the microcassette and her father’s journal.

Alexei walked out onto the terrace, his left arm still in a lightweight sling, but his stride steady and commanding. He stepped up behind her, wrapping his good arm around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

"The council has been restructured," Alexei murmured against her ear. "Dmitri is currently residing in a maximum-security black site in Siberia, reflecting on his life choices. And Carol is settled in that estate in Vermont, receiving top-tier medical care—compliments of the Volkov foundation."

Victoria leaned back against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat. "And the twenty million in bearer bonds?"

Alexei reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of charred, unreadable ash, letting the wind carry it out over the Mediterranean Sea.

"Burned," Alexei said quietly. "Every last cent. Because my father didn't die for money, and neither did yours. The past is dead, Victoria. The slate is wiped clean."

Victoria turned around in his embrace, looking up into his clear, winter-blue eyes—eyes that no longer looked cold, but warm, protective, and entirely hers. She reached up, touching the heavy gold wedding ring still resting securely on her finger, engraved with the initials A.V.

"You know," Victoria whispered with a faint, teasing smile, "you still never properly courted me. No flowers. No dinner date. Just kidnapping me on my twenty-1st birthday."

May you like

Alexei chuckled, a rich, deep sound that melted the last remaining ice between them. He pulled her closer, his lips brushing hers in a slow, deliberate, unhurried kiss that tasted like forever.

"Then I suppose," Alexei whispered against her lips, "I have the rest of our lives to make it up to you, Mrs. Volkov."
