Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Strain

Within twenty minutes, the Hawthorne mansion was on total lockdown. Steel security shutters descended over the lower windows, and armed guards in dark suits patrolled the perimeter.

Inside the primary study, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Grant sat behind his massive mahogany desk. Across from him sat Sabrina, holding a sleeping Emma in her arms. The child was wrapped in a cashmere blanket Grant had personally fetched from his private quarters. A team of top-tier private medical examiners, rushed in via helicopter, stood discreetly near the door with DNA sampling kits.

Vanessa was pacing near the fireplace, clutching a glass of scotch, her expensive designer dress looking suddenly crumpled under the intense stress.

"This is an outrage, Grant!" Vanessa spat, her voice trembling with anger. "You are treating me like a criminal because of the ramblings of a lower-class servant! I am the daughter of Senator Sterling! I am supposed to be your wife in three months!"

"If this child is Julianna's daughter," Grant said, his tone ominously calm, "then she is the sole heiress to forty percent of the Hawthorne Global trust—a share that currently defaults to my control upon my marriage to you."

Vanessa stiffened. "Are you accusing me of something?"

"I'm not accusing anyone yet," Grant replied coldly. He signaled to the lead doctor. "Proceed with the rapid DNA swab. I want results verified against Julianna's archived genetic profile within two hours."

Dr. Vance, the chief geneticist, nodded. He gently approached Sabrina. Sabrina looked terrified, clutching Emma closer.

"It's okay, Sabrina," Grant said, his tone softening slightly. "If you are telling the truth, you have nothing to fear from me. You protected my blood when no one else did. You will never have to beg or hide again."

Sabrina allowed the doctor to gently take a cheek swab from the sleeping toddler, followed by a sample from herself to rule out maternity.

While the medical team rushed the samples to the portable lab unit set up in the west wing, Grant stood up and walked toward a safe concealed behind an oil painting. He punched in an eight-digit code, retrieved a heavy leather-bound file, and laid it on the desk.

"Four years ago," Grant began, flipping through crime scene photos of Julianna’s crashed vehicle, "the police concluded that Julianna’s car suffered a brake line failure during the storm, causing her to plummet off the cliff into the ocean. But six months ago, an anonymous informant tried to sell me an encrypted hard drive claiming the crash was sabotaged."

Vanessa’s hand shook, sloshing scotch onto her wrist. "You... you never told me about a hard drive."

"Because the seller vanished before the transfer was completed," Grant said, staring directly at Vanessa. "Found dead in an alley in Manhattan. Ruled an overdose. But guess whose family foundation funded the rehab clinic that seller had mysteriously checked into two days before he died?"

Vanessa swallowed hard, her face draining of color. "Lots of philanthropists fund clinics, Grant..."

Before Grant could respond, the heavy double doors of the study burst open.

It was Dr. Vance. His face was flushed, holding a printed lab report.

"Mr. Hawthorne," Dr. Vance said, his voice trembling with gravity. "The preliminary rapid-sequence assay is complete."

Grant stood upright, his knuckles turning white on the mahogany desk. "Tell me."

"The child, Emma, shares a 99.9% probability of maternal lineage with the genetic markers of Julianna Hawthorne," Dr. Vance declared. "She is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, your biological niece."

A heavy silence descended upon the room.

Sabrina burst into quiet, relieved tears, pressing her forehead against Emma's soft hair.

Grant closed his eyes for a brief moment, a tear escaping his eyelid before he quickly brushed it away. "Julianna’s child..." he whispered. "She survived."

Suddenly, Vanessa threw her glass of scotch into the grand fireplace. The alcohol flared into a bright blue flash.

"This is ridiculous!" Vanessa screamed, completely losing her composure. "Even if she is Julianna’s bastard child, it changes nothing! Julianna is dead! The kid is a toddler! She can't run a corporation! You're letting a maid's orphan ruin our future!"

"She is not a maid's orphan," Grant roared, his voice thunderous, shaking the room. "She is a Hawthorne! And as long as I draw breath, she will be treated like royalty!"

Grant stepped around the desk and stood in front of Sabrina. He slowly knelt down, just as he had in the hallway, but this time, his posture was one of humility.

"Sabrina Bennett," Grant said softly. "You sacrificed your life, your safety, and your peace to protect my family. You took in a helpless child and raised her with love while hiding in the shadows. For that, I am forever in your debt."

"Mr. Hawthorne, I don't want money," Sabrina sobbed. "I just wanted her to be safe. I was so scared that if you found out, you'd take her from me..."

"Take her from you?" Grant smiled gently—a rare, genuine smile that transformed his stern face. "You are the only mother she has ever known. You aren't going anywhere. From this second on, you are not a maid in this house. You are Emma's mother, and you will live here as a protected member of this family."

Vanessa looked on in utter horror and rage. "Are you insane, Grant?! You're elevating a servant into this family?! What will the media say? What will my father, the Senator, say?!"

Before Grant could answer, his private encrypted phone rang.

He answered it immediately, putting it on speaker. "Report."

The voice of his chief of intelligence, Vance, came through the speaker, sharp and urgent. "Boss, we just intercepted a high-frequency satellite transmission sent from inside your mansion three minutes ago."

Grant’s eyes locked onto Vanessa. "What did it say?"

May you like

"It was an encrypted ping to a private mercenary group based out of New Jersey," Vance reported. "The message contained three words: 'Target confirmed. Execute.'"

Before anyone could react, the power inside the mansion cut out completely, plunging the grand room into absolute pitch-black darkness.
