Chapter 5 - The Resurrection

Three hours later, high in the mountains of Upstate New York, a heavy snow fell over St. Jude’s Sanitarium—a desolate, heavily guarded private facility hidden deep within a pine forest.
On paper, St. Jude’s was an exclusive psychiatric retreat for the ultra-wealthy. In reality, it was a high-tech black site funded by Senator Sterling to hold political enemies and inconvenient witnesses.
Three black armored SUVs tore through the snow-covered gates of the facility, smashing through the security barriers without slowing down.
Grant Hawthorne stepped out of the lead vehicle, clad in a tactical winter coat, flanked by twelve elite private security operators. Sabrina sat in the back of the armored SUV with Emma, safe behind bulletproof glass, watching with her heart in her throat.
"Clear the perimeter," Grant ordered ruthlessly. "Non-lethal force unless fired upon. I want every doctor and guard in this building in handcuffs."
Within six minutes, Grant’s team had neutralized the facility’s guards. Grant strode through the clinical, white corridors of the subterranean basement floor, his heart hammering against his ribs.
He stopped in front of Room 104. The steel door had no window, only an electronic keypad and a heavy deadbolt.
Grant didn't wait for a key. He raised his heavy tactical boot and kicked the door frame with immense force, while his lead operator used a breach charge to blow the lock.
The door burst open.
The room inside was cold, lit only by a dim fluorescent strip. Sitting on a narrow bed in the corner, wrapped in a coarse white blanket, was a thin, frail woman with long, matted dark hair.
She flinched violently at the noise, pulling the blanket over her head, trembling uncontrollably. "Please... no more injections..." she whimpered softly. "I didn't say anything... I promise..."
Grant stopped dead in his tracks. Tears instantly filled his eyes.
"Julianna?" he whispered, his voice trembling with an overwhelming tide of grief and love.
The woman froze. Slowly, hesitantly, she lowered the blanket. Her face was pale and hollow, her brown eyes sunken, but the facial structure was undeniable.
It was Julianna.
She stared at Grant, blinking as if she were seeing a ghost. "Grant...? No... no, you're another hallucination. They give me the drugs... they make me see you..."
Grant dropped to his knees on the cold concrete floor, rushing over to the bed and grabbing her thin, cold hands. "It's me, Jules. It's really me. I'm here. You're safe now. I swear to God, you are safe."
Julianna felt the heat of his hands, heard the familiar cracking in her brother's voice, and realization hit her like a tidal wave. She burst into violent, desperate sobs, flinging her frail arms around Grant’s neck.
"Grant! You found me! They took my baby! They took my sweet baby girl!" Julianna wept hysterically against his shoulder. "They told me she died in the fire! They told me my baby was dead!"
Grant held his sister tightly, wiping away his own tears. "She’s not dead, Jules. She’s alive. She’s right outside."
Julianna pulled back, her eyes wide with shock and disbelief. "What...? What did you say?"
"She’s alive," Grant smiled through his tears. "A brave woman saved her. She raised her. She brought her home to us."
Grant turned toward the doorway and nodded.
Sabrina stepped into the room, holding little Emma.
Julianna stood up on shaky legs, staring at the toddler in duck socks. Emma looked at the frail woman, then held out her little hands, offering the worn, patched-up stuffed rabbit she always carried.
"Pretty lady," Emma said softly in her innocent, tiny voice.
Julianna fell to her knees, crying so hard she could barely breathe, clutching her long-lost daughter to her heart. Sabrina stood beside them, crying tears of overwhelming relief. The nightmare that had begun four years ago on a stormy beach was finally ending.
Or so they thought.

Suddenly, every emergency siren inside the facility began to blip violently. Red lights flashed along the concrete corridor.
Grant’s comms earpiece crackled to life. "Boss! We have a major problem! Senator Sterling and Vanessa just landed on the rooftop helipad with thirty heavily armed state contractors! They’ve surrounded the building and they’ve rigged the lower levels with explosives! They’re going to blow the entire facility to cover up the evidence!"
