Chapter 1 - The Trap Snares Its First RatThe silence that followed Adrian’s slip of the tongue was heavier than the plaster encasing my shattered body.

"You weren’t supposed to do it yet."

The seven words hung in the sterile, bleach-scented air of the ICU, vibrating with cold, unmistakable betrayal.

Vivian Prescott froze, her manicured hand still hovering inches above the crushed pillow she had used to cut off my oxygen seconds earlier. Her eyes, usually calculated and frigid, widened in horror as she slowly turned toward the doorway.

Standing there wasn't just a flock of panicked hospital staff. Flanking Detective Marcus Vance—my former colleague from the State Attorney’s Forensic Division—were two armed officers and two private investigators equipped with chest-mounted tactical body cams. Red recording lights blinked in the dim light like crimson predatory eyes.

"Vivian Prescott," Detective Vance declared, his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. "Step away from the bed. Hands where we can see them."

"This is an outrage!" Vivian shrieked, instantly shifting into her favorite theatrical role: the persecuted high-society matriarch. "I was fixing my daughter-in-law’s pillow! She was gasping for air! Adrian, tell these thugs who we are!"

Adrian didn't move. The color had drained completely from his handsome face, leaving him looking like a marble statue of a coward. He stared at the private investigator holding up a high-definition monitor displaying live audio wave forms—the exact recording of Vivian whispering “I’ll finish what fate couldn’t” followed immediately by Adrian’s damning admission.

"It's all on high-definition audio and 4K infrared video, Mrs. Prescott," Marcus said calmly, stepping forward with handcuffs glinting under the fluorescent lights. "Broadcast live to a secure server at the District Attorney's office."

"Adrian..." Vivian gasped, her composure finally shattering as the iron cuffs clicked around her delicate wrists. "Do something! Call Julian! Call our attorneys!"

"He can't help you, Vivian," I rasped. My voice sounded like grinding stones, raw from the oxygen mask, but the amplifier unit attached to my chest rendered every syllable crystal clear. "And neither can the money you stole."

Adrian flinched, his gaze snapping to mine. For the first time since I woke up from the balcony fall, he saw me not as his broken, obedient wife, but as Hannah Blake—the relentless forensic auditor who had put three state senators behind bars before she ever met him.

"Hannah..." Adrian took a step toward my bed, his hands raised in mock innocence, tears welling in his eyes. "You have to listen to me. I was trying to stop her! I didn't mean—"

"Save it for your arraignment, Adrian," Marcus interrupted, signaling the officers. "You're coming with us too. Complicity in attempted murder and conspiracy."

As the officers dragged Vivian away—screaming threats about her legal team and political connections—and escorted a hyperventilating Adrian out in zip-ties, Marcus leaned down over my bed.

"The room is secured, Hannah," he whispered softly. "The state police detail is outside the door. You're safe."

I stared up at the ceiling tiles, my heart beating steadily against the monitor. "I was safe the moment she touched that pillow, Marcus. Now, open the encrypted file on my drive. It’s time to tear down the Prescott empire."
