Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Mask FallsAt 2:00 AM, the ICU floor was plunged into eerie silence, broken only by the rhythmic beep of heart monitors and the soft hum of ventilation systems.

A man dressed in scrubs, wearing a surgical mask and carrying a clipboard, walked calmly past the nurse's station. The two state troopers sitting outside Room 412 were slouched in their chairs, seemingly fast asleepâtheir coffee cups spiked with heavy sedatives by a bribed orderly.
The man slid into Room 412 and quietly locked the heavy door behind him.
He stepped over to the bed. Inside lay the form of Hannah Blake, wrapped tightly in her full-body plaster cast, her face turned toward the wall, breathing slowly under an oxygen mask.
Adrian pulled off his surgical mask, revealing a twisted, desperate smile.
"I really did love you once, Hannah," Adrian whispered softly, pulling a pre-filled syringe from his pocket. "In my own way. But you were always too smart for your own good. You couldn't just be a good, quiet wife. You had to dig."
He reached out, grabbing the IV line feeding into the patient's arm.
"Potassium chloride," Adrian murmured, inserting the needle into the rubber port. "Fast, painless, and completely invisible on a standard toxicology screen. Goodbye, my dear."
He plunged the liquid into the tube.
Suddenly, the "patient" in the bed turned around sharply.
It wasn't Hannah.
It was a heavily armed female SWAT officer.
Before Adrian could scream, the bathroom door burst open, and three federal agents pinned him to the floor, disarming him in a second.
"Get off me! Get off me!" Adrian shrieked, his face pressed against the cold linoleum.
The two-way mirror on the wall dissolved into clear glass as the lights in the adjacent room turned on.
Sitting in a wheelchair inside the observation room, fully conscious and flanked by Detective Marcus Vance and a team of federal prosecutors, was me.
I picked up the intercom microphone.
"Hello, Adrian," I said, my voice cold and unyielding. "You always were terrible at checking the details."
"Hannah!" Adrian sobbed, thrashing against the handcuffs. "They made me do it! My father forced me! He's alive, Hannah! Charles is alive!"
"We know, Adrian," I replied calmly. "In fact, FinCEN agents intercepted your father at the private airfield in Nassau twenty minutes ago. He was caught trying to board a charter flight to Switzerland with three duffel bags full of unregistered bonds."

Adrianâs jaw dropped. His eyes filled with complete, soul-crushing despair as he realized the entire Prescott legacy had crumbled in a single evening.
"And Adrian?" I added, leaning closer to the glass. "The nurse who slipped me the emergency button in my cast? She wasn't just an attentive hospital employee. She was my father's nieceâmy cousin, Chloe. Weâve been planning this trap since the day you proposed to me."
