Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the EstateFive years in Garden View felt like breathing underwater—quiet, heavy, but alive.

Vivian Carter, now Dr. Vivian Carter, stood in the bustling corridor of St. Jude’s Community Clinic, her white coat flapping against her knees. Her stethoscope hung around her neck like a protective talisman. On her desk sat a framed photograph: a little boy with dark, chaotic hair and eyes the exact shade of slate-gray rain over Lake Michigan.

Leo. Four years old.

He was the anchor that kept her anchored to the earth. He had Adrian’s sharp jawline and that same stubborn tilt of the chin that made Vivian’s heart ache every single time she looked in the mirror. She had kept him safe. She had built a life here, far away from marble fireplaces and fifty-thousand-dollar bribes.

But Chicago had a way of creeping back.

"Vivian," Dr. Thomas, the clinic director, called out, leaning against her doorframe. "We have a VIP incoming. Well, not VIP by our standards—VIP by national headlines. Some high-rolling donor from the Holloway Foundation just bought out our entire wing's deficit for the next three years. They’re sending a representative to inspect the facility today."

Vivian’s pen snapped in half.

The ink pooled against the patient chart like a dark tear.

"Who?" she managed, her voice dangerously thin.

"Some high-powered fixer or executive," Thomas muttered, wiping his glasses. "Name’s... hang on, I have it here. Miller. Sarah Miller."

Vivian exhaled, the suffocating pressure in her chest easing slightly. Not Adrian. Not Eleanor. Just a corporate shadow.

"Good," Vivian said, tossing the broken pen into the recycling bin. "Let them inspect. Maybe they'll see how broken this system really is."

Little did she know, the man who funded the foundation wasn't sending a proxy to inspect the walls. He was coming to find the ghost that had haunted his dreams for five long years.
