Chapter 3 - THE INVITATION TO A WARThe penthouse office on the eightieth floor of Hale Tower offered a panoramic view of a city built on secrets. Rain beat furiously against the floor-to-ceiling glass, blurring the neon lights of Chicago into bleeding smears of red and yellow.

Warren stood at the edge of the glass, a glass of amber scotch untouched in his hand. Behind him, Maya sat on a velvet sofa, nibbling quietly on a plate of pastries provided by the private chef. She was remarkably composed for a child whose world had just violently upended.
The heavy oak doors of the private elevator chimed.
Marcus stepped out, flanked by two armed security guards, dragging a battered, slick-haired man by the collar of his expensive designer suit. The man was Arthur Vance—Warren’s chief legal counsel and executive vice-president for twenty-five years. Vance’s lip was split, and blood stained his pristine silk tie.
"Arthur," Warren didn't turn around. His voice was a deadly calm hum. "Explain to me why my general counsel was personally overseeing a forced eviction at a tenement housing a nine-year-old girl and her mother."
Vance spat a drop of blood onto the imported Italian rug, forcing a bitter, ragged laugh. He looked up at Warren with wild, desperate eyes.
"Do you really think you’re the king of this castle, Warren?" Vance sneered, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "You think Hale Industries is your legacy? You’re just the face on the billboard, old man. While you were playing grieving father at a cemetery, the board has been cleaning house."
Warren slowly turned around. His expression was utterly devoid of human emotion—the look of a predator who had built an empire by crushing anyone foolish enough to challenge him.
"Where is Elena Lin?" Warren demanded softly, taking a single step forward.
"Safe," Vance mocked, flashing a bloody grin. "At least, as safe as a woman can be when she holds the original blueprints and financial ledgers that prove the North Side collapse wasn't an accident. Your son was a brilliant architect, Warren, but he was a terrible spy. He gave copies of everything to that brat on the bench. And her mother... well, Mrs. Lin made the mistake of trying to blackmail us."
Maya dropped her pastry. The small plate shattered against the floor, the sound ringing sharply through the cavernous office. She looked up at Vance with wide, terrified eyes.
"You promised you wouldn't hurt my mom!" Maya cried out, standing up from the sofa. "You said if I gave you the drawing from my locker, she’d be at home waiting for me!"
Warren’s gaze snapped from Vance down to the little girl, then back to his lawyer. The air in the room instantly plummeted to freezing.
"You lied to a child," Warren whispered.
"Business, Warren," Vance spat back, lunging forward despite the guards holding him. "If those ledgers go public, Hale Industries goes under. Every board member, every major investor, every politician we’ve bought off for the last decade will go down in flames. We liquidize the assets, we pin the entire negligence charge on your dead son—make it look like his architectural miscalculations caused the collapse—and we walk away billionaires!"
Before Vance could draw another breath, Warren crossed the room with terrifying speed.
Smash.
Warren’s fist connected directly with Vance’s jaw, sending the lawyer crashing backward into the mahogany desk. Papers scattered like autumn leaves. Vance groaned, clutching his face as blood pooled on the floor.
Warren stood over him, breathing heavily, his knuckles bruised and bleeding. He slowly turned to Marcus.
"Lock him in the lower sub-level vaults," Warren commanded, his voice shaking with suppressed fury. "And mobilize every private asset we have. Track every digital footprint, every satellite ping, every burner phone associated with Apex Holdings."

Warren knelt down in front of Maya, gently placing his large, warm hands on her trembling shoulders.
"Maya," Warren said, looking straight into her tear-filled eyes. "Your mother is going to come home. I swear to you on my son’s grave... I will tear this city apart stone by stone until I bring her back."
