Chapter 2 - The Toxic Toxin

Three days after the raid on the luxury garage, the media was in a feeding frenzy. The prominent Vanguard family was crumbling under the weight of domestic violence charges. Yet, money bought the best lawyers. By Thursday evening, Richard was out on a ten-million-dollar bail, confined to the family’s sprawling estate under house arrest.

Inside the mansion's master study, Evelyn was pacing. She had changed out of the green velvet dress days ago, but a strange, angry red rash had formed on her chest exactly where Clara’s bloody hand had touched her. It burned like liquid fire, resistant to every expensive cream her private doctor prescribed.

"She’s bluffing, Mother," Richard growled, poured himself a glass of scotch, his face bruised from the arrest. "Clara is a nobody. A charity case I brought into this family. She has no power to destroy us."

"Shut up, you fool!" Evelyn snapped, wincing as she scratched at her collarbone. "You almost ruined everything with your sloppy sadism! If you had just waited until the pre-nuptial amendment was signed, we would have had her family’s old shipping land. Now, she holds the panic fob data, the garage security footage, everything."

"We can buy the judge," Richard muttered.

"We can't buy her if she's dead," Evelyn whispered, her eyes narrowing into slits. "Call Julian. Tell him to make it look like a suicide. The trauma of the abuse was too much for her... a tragic leap from the city bridge."

Meanwhile, across town in a heavily guarded private clinic, Clara wasn't recovering; she was working. She sat in front of a laptop, watching a live biometric feed. On the screen was a digital rendering of the human nervous system, flashing yellow, moving rapidly toward red.

The label on the profile read: Evelyn Vanguard.

Clara touched the scar on her waist, a grim smile touching her lips. The blood she had smeared on Evelyn's dress wasn't just hers. It had been mixed with a highly concentrated, contact-absorbing neurotoxin derived from rare botanical extracts—a secret her own father, a disgraced biochemist whom the Vanguards had ruined years ago, had left behind.

"You thought you married a victim, Richard," Clara whispered to the empty room. "You married the executioner."

Suddenly, her phone buzzed. An unknown number. She answered. A cold, professional voice spoke on the other end: "The package is moving. Julian has been activated. They are coming for you tonight, Miss Clara."
