Chapter 5 - The Velvet Coffin

Evelyn’s vision was blurring. The pain in her chest was a roaring fire now, radiating down her arms. She looked at the tablet. Richard was weeping, his eyes pleading through the screen. Despite her monstrous nature, Richard was her legacy. Without him, the Vanguard name died.

"I’ll... I’ll sign," Evelyn choked out, tears of pain and humiliation spilling down her wrinkled cheeks. "Give me... the antidote..."

Clara pulled a legal document from her jacket, along with a pen and a small silver vial. "This transfers 100% of Vanguard Enterprises, all properties, and all offshore assets to the Arthur Foundation. Sign it."

With trembling, uncoordinated fingers, Evelyn forced her signature onto the dotted line. The moment she dropped the pen, Clara grabbed the papers, verifying the signature.

She then tossed the silver vial onto the floor. Evelyn scrambled for it like an animal, unscrewing the cap and drinking the bitter liquid inside. Within seconds, the suffocating pressure in her lungs began to ease. She slumped against the wall, gasping for air, her green velvet dress—which she had put back on in a delusional attempt to regain her status—now ruined, sweaty, and pathetic.

"You think you've won," Evelyn hissed, her voice returning. "You have the money. But the moment I call the police, you and your father go to prison for extortion, attempted murder, and kidnapping!"

Clara laughed. It was a cold, beautiful sound that sent shivers down Evelyn's spine.

"Call them," Clara said, standing up and smoothing her white suit. "Go ahead. Look out the window, Evelyn."

Evelyn crawled to the massive grand window overlooking the courtyard. Down below, dozens of police cruisers, FBI vehicles, and news vans were pulling up, their sirens wailing into the night.

"You see, Evelyn, I didn't kidnap Richard," Clara said, smiling. "My father isn't even in the country. That video feed of Richard in the basement? It was recorded two hours ago. I didn't tie him up. The FBI did. They raided his hidden safehouse where he fled to escape his bail violation. And as for you..."

Clara pointed to the grand double doors of the mansion as they were kicked open for the second time that week.
