Chapter 2 - THE UNWELCOME GUEST

Three days later, Nina stood at the front desk of the small marketing agency where she worked, her heart stopping when she saw the man in the charcoal-gray suit standing in the lobby. Wesley Cole looked like a deity among mortals, completely out of place in the cramped, buzzing office.
“We need to talk, Nina,” he said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate register that made her blood run cold.
“We have nothing to say,” she whispered, grabbing her purse and trying to push past him.
He moved with a speed that startled her, blocking her path. “I know about the girls. I know they’re five years old. I know you’ve been struggling, and I know… I know you haven’t moved on.”
“Move on?” Nina laughed, a sharp, bitter sound. “You call it moving on, Wesley? You call silence ‘moving on’? You left me with a broken bank account and a promise that shattered before the plane even landed in California.”
“I was building a future!” he argued, his eyes flashing.
“You were building a monument to yourself!” Nina retorted. “My daughters don’t know who you are. They think their father is a ghost who died in a war I made up to protect them from the truth: that their real father was too busy becoming a billionaire to care about a woman who loved him when he had nothing.”

She tried to leave, but he gripped her arm—gently, but firmly. “I want to see them. I want to be a part of their lives.”
Nina looked him dead in the eye. “If you step into their lives now, you aren't just opening a door to happiness, Wesley. You’re opening a door to a hurricane. Are you prepared to lose everything you’ve built to earn their trust?”
