Chapter 3 - THE PRICE OF ABSENCE

Wesley’s attempt at fatherhood was a disaster. He hired a private concierge to find the best school, the best toys, the best doctors, but when he showed up at the Queens park where Nina took them on Saturdays, the girls reacted with sheer terror.
To them, he wasn't the CEO of a multi-billion dollar empire. He was the "Scary Man" who made Mommy cry.
He spent weeks in the background, a shadow in a dark sedan, watching Nina struggle. He saw her working double shifts, saw her skip meals so the girls could have new shoes, saw the exhaustion that never left her eyes. It was a torture more refined than any he had ever inflicted on his business enemies.
Then came the tragedy. Nina’s agency went under, and she was served an eviction notice.
Wesley arrived at her apartment just as she was trying to calm a crying child. The hallway was filled with boxes. He didn't ask; he just walked in and began helping.
“Stop!” Nina sobbed, pushing a box of toys away from him. “Why are you doing this? Is this just another project for you? A little charity work to satisfy your ego?”

Wesley stood in the middle of her modest living room, his expensive suit wrinkled, his hands dusty from the boxes. “I’m not doing this for my ego, Nina. I’m doing this because I can’t breathe when I think about you suffering. I left five years ago because I was afraid of failing. But look at me now—I’m the most successful man in the country, and I’ve never felt more like a failure than when I look at your face.”
For a moment, the wall cracked. Nina leaned against the wall, her composure finally breaking. “You don’t get to come back and fix it with money, Wesley. You can’t buy back five years of being a single mother.”
