Chapter 14 - Shadows in the Cell BlockWhile Julian and I were rebuilding our lives in Manhattan, three hundred miles away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, the walls were closing in on my ex-fiancé.

Stripped of his tailored suits, his luxury watches, and his untouchable legal immunity, he sat in a cramped, cinder-block cell smelling of antiseptic and despair. But he wasn't broken yet. His mind—once a brilliant engine of corporate strategy, now warped by bitter obsession—was plotting.

A heavy metallic clang echoed down the cell block as a correctional officer approached his door.

"Vance. Visitor in Booth Four. You've got ten minutes," the guard grunted, unlocking the heavy steel latch.

My ex-fiancé didn't speak. He stood up slowly, his orange jumpsuit rustling, and shuffled down the damp corridor toward the glass-partitioned visitation room. He expected a lawyer. He expected a panicked message from his mother, who was currently fighting foreclosure on her remaining properties.

Instead, when he sat down on the bolted metal stool and picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver, the face on the other side of the glass wasn't a lawyer.

It was his former chief legal counsel—the man who had helped him draft the fraudulent post-nuptial agreements and who had managed to slip through the federal net with a minor plea deal.

"You took your sweet time getting here," my ex-fiancé snarled into the receiver, pressing his face against the scratched Plexiglas. "Did you bring the offshore account access codes I asked for?"

The lawyer on the other side didn't smile. He looked pale, sweating profusely under the harsh fluorescent lights of the prison intake room.

"The accounts are gone, boss," the lawyer whispered, his voice shaking. "Every single shell corporation in the Caymans, Zurich, and Panama. They’ve been systematically dismantled."

My ex-fiancé’s eyes bulged, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the plastic phone. "Dismantled by whom? The DOJ didn't have jurisdiction over those private trusts!"

"Not the DOJ," the lawyer swallowed hard. "It was Julian. And Clara. They didn't just reclaim the software patents—they used your own master administrative keys to execute a reverse-asset forfeiture. As of this morning, your entire remaining estate legally belongs to the Vance & Vance Restitution Group."

For a long moment, the cell block seemed to go completely silent.

Then, a terrifying, humorless laugh escaped my ex-fiancé’s throat. He pressed his forehead against the glass, his eyes wild and unhinged.

"They think they won," he whispered, a venomous smile twisting his face. "They think taking my money stops the game. They have no idea what’s coming next."
