Chapter 15 - The Anonymous PackageThe storm broke on a rainy Friday afternoon exactly three weeks later.

I was at my desk reviewing the final merger documents with Elena when a courier dropped off a heavy, unmarked manila envelope at the front reception desk. There was no return address. The postage stamp was postmarked from an upstate federal facility.
Elena picked it up with a pair of sterile latex tweezers—a precaution we had both adopted since the wedding disaster—and laid it carefully on the stainless-steel examination table in our secure archive room.
"Do you want me to run it through the digital scanner for chemical residues first?" Elena asked, her eyes sharp with caution.
"No," I said, stepping forward. "Open it. Let's see what else he thinks he can take from us."
Elena sliced the top open with a letter opener. Inside wasn't a legal threat, nor was it a bitter letter. It was a single, heavily encrypted flash drive and a handwritten note scrawled in frantic, jagged capital letters:
“YOU FOUND THE CODE, BUT YOU MISSED THE VAULT. CHECK THE FOUNDATION'S ORIGINAL CHARTER FROM FIVE YEARS AGO. CHECK WHO SIGNED AS THE PRIMARY SILENT BENEFACTOR. YOUR EMPIRE WAS BUILT ON STOLEN SOULS, CLARA. ENJOY THE FALL.”
My breath hitched. I looked at Elena, whose face had gone completely pale.
"A silent benefactor?" Elena whispered. "When the foundation was originally established five years ago... your ex-fiancé wasn't the sole founder. He had an anonymous backer who funded the initial seed round before he even met you."
Before I could answer, the office door swung open, and Julian rushed in, his laptop open in his hands, his face drained of color.
"Clara, you need to see this," Julian said, his voice urgent as he slammed the laptop down onto the table and spun the screen toward us. "I plugged the flash drive into our isolated sandbox network. It’s not a virus. It’s a digital ledger mapping out every single financial transaction tied to the foundation’s original endowment."
I leaned over the screen, my eyes scanning the cascading rows of data.
At the very bottom of the ledger, attached to an untraceable offshore trust account that had been funneling money into our corporate accounts for years, was a name I never, ever expected to see.

It wasn't my ex-fiancé. It wasn't even his mother.
It was my own father.
