Chapter 10 - The Vow on the WaterfrontHookIn a city that feared his name, a reformed mafia boss discovers that true legacy isn't built on blood and steel—it's built on the quiet promise of a family.

The autumn wind whipped across the Baltimore harbor, carrying the crisp scent of salt, damp wood, and changing seasons.
At the newly dedicated memorial plaque at Pier Nineteen, a small gathering stood quietly in the twilight.
At the center stood Elena, wearing a dark blue coat, holding a single white rose. Beside her stood Lily, wearing her yellow coat, clutching her plastic giraffe in one hand while her other hand was securely locked inside Roman’s large, scarred palm.
Marcus stood a few paces back, keeping a respectful distance alongside two federal marshals who were quietly ensuring the area remained undisturbed.
Roman knelt down on one knee beside Lily, bringing himself down to her eye level.
"Do you know what this place is, Lily?" Roman asked softly, knowing she could read his lips and feel the deep resonance of his voice against her hand.
Lily looked up at the bronze plaque bearing her father’s name: Daniel Ruiz — A Good Man Who Served the Harbor with Honor.
She traced the raised letters with her tiny fingers. Then, she looked up at Roman, her big brown eyes shining with understanding.
She lifted her free hand and signed three distinct words: Daddy is here.
Roman felt a lump rise in his throat—a sensation entirely foreign to the ruthless mafia boss who had once believed tears were a myth. He swallowed hard, pulling the little girl into a gentle, protective embrace, resting his chin gently against her head.
Elena stepped closer, her hand resting softly on Roman’s broad shoulder.
"He would have loved you," Elena whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Daniel, I mean. He always said this city needed fewer monsters and more men with courage."
Roman looked up from Lily, meeting Elena’s gaze. The distance that had once separated the wealthy underworld king and the struggling cleaning woman had vanished completely, replaced by an unbreakable bond forged in poison, shadows, and grace.
"I used to think courage meant being the last man standing," Roman said quietly, the ocean breeze rippling through his dark hair. "I was wrong. True courage... is letting someone close enough to hear your heart."
Lily pulled back from the hug, looked between her mother and Roman, and decided the moment required action. She took both of their hands—Roman’s large, calloused hand in her left, and Elena’s soft, worn hand in her right—and firmly pressed them together.
She patted both of their hands twice, her signature seal of absolute approval.

Safe.
Roman smiled, wrapping his fingers securely around both Elena’s hand and Lily’s small, warm palm as they turned together toward the sunset, walking away from the dark history of the waterfront and toward a future they would build as one family.
