Chapter 7 - The Last HeartbeatHookWhen the machines flatline and the monster runs out of time, a miracle walks through the door holding a yellow giraffe.

The metal door of the command center didn't just open—it blew inward with a deafening crash as Marcus hurled a breaching charge against the reinforced hinges.
Before the smoke could even clear, a small yellow coat darted through the gap.
Lily hadn't stayed behind in the boathouse. When she heard the explosion, she followed the vibrations straight down the concrete stairs, her plastic giraffe clutched tightly in her arms.
She saw Roman collapsed on the floor, gasping for air, and Dr. Vance standing over him with the iron weight raised high.
Vance spun around, snarling. "Get that brat out of here—"
Before Vance could swing, Lily did something extraordinary. She didn't scream. She didn't cry. She sprinted directly toward Vance with surprising speed, hurled her plastic yellow giraffe straight at his shins, and kicked him square in the knee joint with her heavy winter boot.
Crack.
Vance yelled out in pain, stumbling backward against the main server rack.
Marcus rushed in behind her, his rifle raised, and pistol-whipped Vance across the jaw with enough force to send the doctor crashing unconscious to the floor in a heap of tangled limbs and broken glasses.
Marcus didn't check the body. He dropped to his knees beside Roman.
"Boss! Boss, talk to me!" Marcus yelled, tapping Roman’s face.
Roman’s eyes were half-closed, his chest completely motionless. The terrifying flatline tone of a disconnected medical monitor chimed somewhere in the background. His pulse was gone.
Elena ran into the room just then, stopping dead in her tracks as she saw Roman lying motionless on the concrete floor. She put her hands over her mouth, a stifled sob escaping her throat.
"He's stopped," Marcus whispered, his face turning pale. "The aerosol... it got him."
Lily pushed past Marcus’s arm.
She didn't listen to the panic in the room. She dropped to her knees beside Roman's massive frame, right where his head rested against the cold floor.
She placed her small, warm palm directly over the center of his chest—right above his failing heart.
She closed her eyes, concentrating so hard her small forehead wrinkled. She couldn't hear the silence of his pulse, but she could feel the absolute stillness beneath her palm.
Beat, her tiny mind commanded, remembering every lullaby her mother had ever sung against her own chest. Beat.
One second.
Two seconds.
Ten endless seconds passed in absolute silence.
Marcus bowed his head, closing his eyes in defeat. Elena reached down to pull her daughter away, knowing it was over.
Then—underneath Lily’s palm—a single, heavy thud echoed.
Thump.
Roman’s back arched slightly off the floor as a massive gasp of air tore through his throat. His eyes flew wide open, fixed on the ceiling, coughing violently as fresh oxygen flooded his lungs.
Thump-thump.
His heart restarted with the force of a hammer hitting an anvil.

Lily opened her eyes, looked down at his chest, and signed with a small, tired smile: Alive.
Roman turned his head slowly, looking past Marcus and Elena, straight into the wide, luminous brown eyes of the little girl who had refused to let him die.
