Chapter 6 - The Fallout

By late afternoon, the shockwaves of the morning’s events had completely dismantled Monica’s carefully constructed web of lies.
Sitting in the base legal office with Colonel Vance and an NCIS investigator across the desk from me, the full scope of what Monica had attempted to pull off became crystal clear.
“It goes deeper than just the CPS report, Commander,” the NCIS investigator said, sliding a digital tablet across the desk toward me. “We pulled the bank records for your sister’s construction company. They’re over four hundred thousand dollars in debt. They were facing foreclosure on their primary residence next month.”
I looked at the glowing screen. Bank transfers, overdue loan notices, and desperate emails between Monica and her husband discussing how to legally access "dependent survivor entitlements" tied to my son’s name.
“She thought that if CPS took Eli into emergency state custody, she and her husband could petition the family court as primary blood relatives for foster guardianship,” I said, connecting the dots. “Which would grant them temporary control over his federal survivor benefits and state educational trust allotments.”
“Bingo,” Colonel Vance grunted, leaning back in his chair with a cup of black coffee. “An absolute textbook case of financial desperation masking itself as moral superiority. She thought a Navy JAG officer would roll over in a courtroom because she weaponized civilian bureaucracy against you.”
“She miscalculated,” I said calmly.
“She didn't just miscalculate, Rachel; she committed a federal felony,” Vance said, a faint grin touching the corner of his mouth. “The U.S. Attorney’s office is already preparing formal indictments for wire fraud, filing false official statements, and conspiracy against a federal officer. She’s looking at hard time. And her husband is going down right alongside her for complicity.”
“What about Eli?” I asked, the only question that truly mattered.
“Eli’s record is clean, sealed, and completely protected,” Vance reassured me. “State CPS has officially expunged the entire file, classifying it as a malicious, fabricated report by a third party. Your family name in the system is completely exonerated.”
I let out a long, slow breath—the first real breath of relief I had taken since 4:47 PM on Tuesday afternoon.
“Thank you, Colonel. For moving so fast.”

“That’s what the uniform stands for, Commander. We take care of our own—both in the courtroom and at home.”
When I finally drove home from the base that evening, the sun was beginning to set, casting golden hues across the Virginia pines.
