Chapter 3 - THE RIPPLE EFFECT

The silence in the River View Ballroom was heavier than the crystal chandeliers overhead.
“Vanessa!” Daniel yelled, grabbing her by the bare shoulder, his fingers digging in hard enough to leave bruises. “What did you do? My father’s accounts are locked! Our wedding venue bill just bounced! The caterers are refusing to serve dessert until they see cash!”
“I didn’t do anything!” Vanessa shrieked, tears instantly ruining her expensive wedding makeup as mascara ran down her cheeks in thick, dark streaks. “It’s my sister! It’s Evelyn! She’s crazy! She’s playing a prank!”
“A prank?” Daniel’s father stormed over, his face twisted in absolute disgust. He looked down at the legal papers scattered across the floor, his eyes scanning the forensic accounting headers. “This isn't a prank, you absolute fool. This is a federal white-collar indictment waiting to happen. The signature on these estate transfers... this is grand larceny!”
“Dad, listen to me—” Daniel stammered, holding his hands up defensively. “We can fix this, we can—insiders, lawyers—”
“Fix what?” His father spat, adjusting his tie with shaking hands. “Vanguard Capital’s compliance board just pinged my phone. They are launching an internal audit into your hiring practices, Daniel. Do you know who owns the venture capital firm that funded your startup last month? Do you even know who your silent senior partner is?”
Daniel blinked, stunned. “It’s... it’s an anonymous trust. ‘Apex Holdings.’”
A cold, mirthless laugh escaped his father’s lips. “Look at the bottom of the last page, you idiot.”
Daniel dropped to his knees, frantically brushing aside the white rose petals to grab the final sheet of the legal brief. His eyes scanned the corporate registry seal at the bottom of the document.
OWNER AND PRINCIPAL BENEFICIARY OF APEX HOLDINGS: EVELYN CARTER.
Daniel slowly stood up, looking at his new wife as if he were seeing a monster for the very first time.
“You... you stole millions from the woman who raised you?” Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying mix of betrayal and sheer panic. “And you didn't just steal from a stranger—you stole from the person who owns the exact capital backing my entire career? Are you out of your mind?”
“She didn’t need it!” Vanessa screamed, losing all composure as her pristine wedding fantasy shattered completely. She lunged forward, grabbing Daniel’s lapels. “We were going to use it to buy our way into your family’s inner circle! We were going to win!”
“Win?” Daniel pushed her away with such force that she stumbled backward, her heavy tulle skirt tangling around her ankles and sending her crashing down onto the floor. “We just lost everything. My father is cutting me off, my career is finished before it started, and your sister owns every single cent we thought we had.”
Around them, the elite guests began whispering behind their champagne flutes. Phones were out. Cameras were flashing. Within minutes, video clips of the disgraced bride sitting on the floor in her ruined dress would hit social media, instantly trending under the hashtag #RiverWeddingDisaster.
Vanessa sat amid the white rose petals, sobbing uncontrollably. She pulled out her phone one last time and dialed Evelyn’s number.

She wasn’t unavailable. She had blocked Vanessa’s number entirely.
