Chapter 5 - The Web Tightens

Back in New York, the gears of corporate retribution were spinning at breakneck speed.

Vincent Vance didn’t waste a single second. Armed with the digital ledger and the emergency trustee authorization, he filed an emergency injunction in the Manhattan Supreme Court. By midnight, a federal asset-freeze order was slapped across every residential property, luxury vehicle, and offshore holding registered under the Mercer family name.

I sat up in my hospital bed, watching the local news broadcast on the wall-mounted television.

“Breaking news tonight in the financial sector,” the anchor announced, her voice crisp and professional. “A massive restructuring has hit Mercer Development, one of the city’s leading mid-tier construction and real estate firms. Sources confirm that temporary trustee Arthur Mercer Jr. has assumed absolute control of corporate assets following an emergency forensic audit uncovering severe financial irregularities...”

Footage of our suburban family mansion flashed on the screen—a squad of federal marshals slapping neon-orange SEIZED notices across the mahogany double doors.

My phone buzzed again. It wasn't Dad. It was an unknown international number.

I swiped and accepted the call.

“Arthur?”

It was Marcus Thorne, the senior managing partner at Thorne & Sterling Capital—our primary corporate lender and the man holding forty million dollars in commercial debt against Dad’s development portfolio.

“Marcus,” I said neutrally.

“I saw the filings, kid,” Marcus said, his voice a gravelly mix of surprise and grudging respect. “Your old man has been playing fast and loose with the lender covenants for years. We were planning on calling in his loans next month and forcing a complete liquidation of Mercer Development. But seeing as you’re holding the keys now... I’d rather talk to you.”

“I’m listening,” I said.

“If you restructure the corporate debt under your direct management, waive the personal guarantees your father signed, and hand over the prime commercial lots in downtown Manhattan... Thorne & Sterling will wipe out the family’s legacy debt and back your independent venture.”

It was the ultimate chess move. Thorne was offering me the crown jewels of my father’s empire on a silver platter, completely bypassing the old man.

“Draft the papers, Marcus,” I said without hesitation. “I’ll sign them electronically tonight.”

“Done,” Marcus chuckled. “Welcome to the big leagues, kid. Your family never deserved your brain.”
