Chapter 9 - The Fall of the EmpireBy 9:00 AM, the financial world was in absolute chaos.

I sat at the massive mahogany conference table on the top floor of Ashford-Sterling Global headquarters in downtown Chicago. But the name plate outside the double doors had already been unscrewed.

Marcus Sterling sat across from me in handcuffs, flanked by two federal agents and three senior SEC investigators. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his face pale with a mix of shock and unmitigated rage.

"You can't do this, Daniel!" Marcus hissed, leaning across the table as much as his restraints allowed. "We built this firm together! Without my West Coast network, the stock will plummet forty percent by noon!"

"Let it plummet," I said coldly, signing the final legal document that dissolved our partnership and stripped him of every single voting share he had illegally acquired. "I’d rather burn this building to the ground than let a thief and an accessory to child abuse profit off my family's name."

Julian Vance slid a thick stack of federal indictment papers across the table, stopping right in front of Marcus's trembling hands.

"Wire fraud, forgery, conspiracy, and extortion," Julian recited smoothly. "Along with financial collaboration in a domestic abuse and endangerment scheme. Federal sentencing guidelines put you away for a minimum of fifteen years, Marcus. Say goodbye to your corner office."

Marcus stared at the papers, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, before two federal agents grabbed his shoulders and hauled him upright toward the private elevator bank.

As the elevator doors slid shut, sealing his fate, I didn't feel triumph or joy. I just felt a profound, cleansing emptiness—the kind that comes when a cancer is finally cut out from the root.

"Well," Julian said, adjusting his tie as he watched the elevator descend. "The corporate restructuring is complete. You retain 100% controlling interest, and the board has already voted to rename the firm Ashford & Associates."

"Good," I stood up, buttoning my suit jacket. "Cancel my afternoon meetings, Julian."

"All of them?" Julian raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Even the Tokyo acquisition call?"

"Especially the Tokyo call," I replied firmly. "Tell them my family needs me at home."
