Chapter 8 - Echoes of the UnderworldTwo weeks later, the Chicago underworld was a different landscape.

With Marcus Vale arrested and the eastern syndicate splintered by federal raids, a power vacuum threatened to destabilize every shipping route from the Great Lakes to the Gulf.

Captains from three different rival factions requested an audience with the legendary boss of Lake Forest. They expected a weakened, desperate man clinging to the remnants of an empire.

Instead, they found Daniel Kang seated at the head of a massive mahogany conference table in downtown Chicago’s financial district.

He wasn't in his wheelchair.

He wore his tactical leg braces beneath a tailored charcoal suit, standing tall behind the high-backed leather chair, gripping the armrests with steady, powerful hands. His face bore the scars of his past, but his eyes burned with absolute, unyielding authority.

Seated to his immediate right was Amara, reviewing corporate merger agreements with the cold precision of a master strategist.

The syndicate captains filed into the room, their eyes darting nervously toward Daniel. They had heard the rumors that he was paralyzed, that his empire was ripe for the taking.

Silence filled the room as Daniel lowered himself slowly into his chair, keeping his posture rigid and commanding.

"I hear some of you have been confused about who controls the lakefront," Daniel said, his voice cutting through the heavy air like a razor blade.

Not a single captain spoke. Not a single man dared to meet his gaze directly.

"The rules haven't changed," Daniel continued, leaning forward. "The river belongs to us. The freight belongs to us. And anyone who forgets that..." He paused, letting his gaze sweep across the table. "...will end up like Vincent Park. Forgotten, cold, and rotting behind bars."

A chorus of immediate, respectful nods rippled through the room.

The throne wasn't just occupied. It was fortified stronger than ever before.
