Chapter 9 - A New HorizonThat evening, after the last syndicate captain had departed and the corporate offices fell silent, Daniel and Amara returned to the Lake Forest estate.

The snow had begun to fall softly outside, coating the bare branches of the oak trees in a pristine white blanket.
Inside the study, a warm fire crackled in the stone fireplace, casting dancing amber shadows across the walls.
Daniel sat in his armchair by the window, staring out into the quiet night. His legs rested comfortably on an ottoman, the physical exhaustion of the day settling deep into his muscles.
Amara walked in carrying two glasses of aged whiskey, handing one to him before settling onto the sofa opposite him.
"You pushed yourself too hard today at the meeting," Amara said softly, watching him over the rim of her glass. "The braces left bruises."
"I had to show them," Daniel replied, taking a slow sip of the amber liquid. "In our world, perception is armor. If they think you're bleeding, the wolves close in."
"They aren't wolves anymore," Amara smiled gently. "They're employees."
Daniel laughed—a genuine, deep sound that hadn't escaped his lips in months. He set his glass down on the table, leaned forward, and looked at his wife with an expression of complete devotion.
"You saved my life, Amara. Not just from Vincent, and not just from Marcus."
"You saved your own life, Daniel," she replied, shaking her head. "I just helped you remember who you were."
The fire crackled softly in the hearth, throwing warmth across the room. For the first time in six months, the ghosts of the past night no longer haunted the corners of the house.
