Chapter 7 - The Unseen ArchitectThe penthouse fell back into silence, broken only by the low hum of the city lights outside.

Maya sank slowly onto the velvet sofa, burying her face in her hands. The adrenaline was fading, leaving behind a heavy, hollow exhaustion. All the triumph from the gala felt distant, overshadowed by the ugly ghosts of the past.
A moment later, the cushion beside her dipped.
Roman sat down, pouring a glass of amber whiskey. He didn't push her to speak. He simply placed the glass within her reach and sat in quiet solidarity, his massive frame radiating a steady, unshakeable warmth.
âYou could have signed it,â Maya whispered into her hands, her voice muffled. âIt would have ended cleanly. No more shadows. No more federal investigations hanging over our lives.â
âIt wouldn't have ended,â Roman replied quietly. âMen like Ethan don't learn from clean endings. They only learn when they hit the floor.â
Maya lowered her hands, looking at him with searching eyes. âDid you leak those financial records to the federal task force, Roman?â
Roman didn't blink. He took a slow sip of his drink. âEthan has been cutting corners on public safety for five years. His concrete suppliers were flagged by municipal inspectors months ago. I simply... accelerated the paperwork so the city audit team wouldn't look the other way.â
A small, ironic smile touched Mayaâs lips. âYou're terrifying, do you know that?â
âOnly to people who threaten what is mine,â Roman corrected, turning his head to look directly into her eyes. His expression softened, the ruthless titan melting away into the man who loved her unconditionally. âYou spent years building things for everyone else, MayaâHaven House, studios, futures for strangers. Itâs time someone built a wall around you.â
Maya reached out, her fingers tracing the sharp line of his jaw. âI don't need a wall, Roman. I just need a partner who lets me fight my own battles, even when the giants try to crush me.â
Roman caught her hand, pressing a warm kiss to her palm. âYou fought him tonight. I just made sure he couldn't hit you from behind.â
Suddenly, Mayaâs phone on the coffee table buzzed aggressively.

It wasn't a text. It was a breaking news flash from the Chicago Tribune.
Maya picked it up, her eyes widening as she read the headline.
