Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN CAGE

"When a billionaire mafia kingpin offers you a job, 'No' is just a word that means 'Try harder'."Three days later, the reality of Karen’s new existence set in. True to Lorenzo’s word, Maison Delacour on Madison Avenue had been boarded up overnight. A sign reading Closed for Global Relocation hung on the glass doors. Brenda Wallace had vanished from the retail industry entirely; rumors whispered that she had fled to Ohio after being blacklisted from every luxury brand in the country.

Karen had used the money to clear her mother’s medical debts, pay her sister’s tuition for the entire year, and satisfy her landlord in Queens. For the first time in five years, she could breathe.

But that peace evaporated at exactly 8:00 AM on Thursday morning.

A sleek, armored black Rolls-Royce pulled up to the curb outside her cramped, crumbling apartment building. A man in a tailored suit knocked on her door. It wasn't Marco, but another imposing figure who introduced himself as Silvio.

"Miss Seymour," Silvio said with a polite but unyielding bow. "Mr. Rossi requests your presence at his estate in Westchester. A car is waiting."

"And if I say I’m busy?" Karen asked, holding her coffee mug tight.

Silvio smiled, a gesture that didn't reach his cold blue eyes. "Mr. Rossi does not request things twice, Miss Seymour. It is for the young lady, Mia."

That was the hook. Karen couldn't forget the terrified look in Mia’s blue eyes. Ten minutes later, she was in the back of the luxury vehicle, watching the skyline of Manhattan fade into the rolling, heavily guarded hills of upstate New York.

The Rossi estate was not just a house; it was a fortress. High iron gates topped with security cameras gave way to a winding driveway lined with ancient oaks. Men in tactical gear, carrying submachine guns partially concealed beneath heavy coats, patrolled the perimeter.

When the car stopped, Karen was escorted into a breathtaking, light-filled sunroom. Sitting at a massive mahogany desk, reviewing financial ledgers, was Lorenzo Rossi. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing forearms corded with muscle and laced with faint, jagged scars.

Mia was in the corner of the room, surrounded by thousands of dollars worth of sensory toys, but she was rocking back and forth, refusing to touch any of them. A middle-aged woman in a strict nanny uniform stood nearby, looking utterly defeated.

"She hasn't eaten since yesterday," Lorenzo said without looking up from his papers. "She won't speak to the child psychologists I flew in from Switzerland. She won't speak to her governess. She keeps asking for the 'quiet lady'."

Lorenzo finally closed the ledger and looked at Karen. The intensity of his gaze made her breath hitch.

"I am offering you a position, Karen. Full-time behavioral companion and specialist for my daughter. You will live here, at the estate. You will have your own wing. You will oversee her schedule, her therapies, and her daily well-being."

Karen swallowed hard. "Mr. Rossi, I told you, I’m not a doctor. I studied child development in college, but I had to drop out when my mother got sick. I only know how to help Mia because my cousin Noah is on the spectrum. I’m not qualified for this."

"I don't care about degrees," Lorenzo said, rising from his desk and walking toward her. He stopped just inches away, radiating a dangerous, magnetic warmth. "I care about results. The highly paid doctors make her scream. You made her quiet. Name your price."

"It's not about the money—"

"One hundred thousand dollars a month," Lorenzo stated flatly.

Karen choked on her air. "What?"

"One hundred thousand a month, tax-free. Your sister will be moved to a private condo near her university with 24-hour security. Your mother will be placed in the best private care facility in the country. In exchange, you belong to this estate. You protect my daughter's mind. Do we have a deal?"

Before Karen could answer, Mia noticed her. The little girl’s face lit up, the heavy rocking stopping instantly. She scrambled off the floor, holding out a drawing she had been working on. It was a crude crayon sketch of two people under a dark blanket.

"Karen!" Mia cried, running over and stopping just short of touching her, remembering the rule. "Look. I drew the quiet room."

Karen looked down at the child, then up at Lorenzo, whose dark eyes were watching her with a calculation that sent shivers down her spine. She knew what this man was. She knew that entering his world meant entering a maze of violence, power, and blood. But looking at Mia, and thinking of her family’s safety, she knew she had already lost the choice.

"Deal," Karen whispered.

Lorenzo nodded, a slow, satisfied smile spreading across his handsome face. "Welcome to the family, Karen. Marco will show you to your quarters. Rest today. Tomorrow, your new life begins."

What Karen didn't know was that her presence in the house had already triggered a silent alarm among Lorenzo’s enemies. In the shadows of the New York underworld, a rival family—the Luchesi syndicate—was watching the Rossi estate. And they had just found Lorenzo Rossi’s newest vulnerability.
