Chapter 6 - THE TRAP IS SPRUNG

"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was making you think he was the only monster in the room."Six months later.

The New York underworld had completely stabilized under the absolute, undisputed rule of Lorenzo Rossi. The Luchesi family was a historical footnote. The Rossi Global Logistics empire had doubled in size, completely legitimate on paper, masking the absolute control Lorenzo held over the city.

The Westchester estate had been rebuilt into an opulent paradise. Mia was thriving; she was speaking in full sentences, attending a specialized private academy built exclusively for her on the estate grounds, and her meltdowns were a rare thing of the past.

Karen was no longer just the behavioral specialist. She was the matriarch in all but name. She moved into Lorenzo's master suite, her life completely intertwined with his. She wore diamonds that cost more than her old apartment building in Queens, and her sister had graduated college at the top of her class, completely protected from the harsh realities of the world.

It was a perfect, beautiful fairy tale built on top of a graveyard.

On a warm autumn evening, Lorenzo hosted a massive charity gala at the estate, celebrating the launch of the Mia Rossi Foundation for Neurodiversity. The garden was filled with politicians, judges, celebrities, and billionaires—all of them bowing their heads in deep respect to the man who controlled their city.

Karen stood on the grand balcony, wearing an emerald green silk gown that contrasted beautifully with her hair. She watched Lorenzo below, talking to the Governor of New York. He looked up, caught her eye, and raised his glass with a warm, loving smile.

Suddenly, a soft voice spoke behind her.

"It’s a beautiful kingdom he built for you, isn’t it?"

Karen whirled around. Standing in the shadows of the balcony was a woman dressed in a server’s uniform, holding a tray of champagne glasses. But as she stepped into the moonlight, Karen’s blood ran completely cold.

It was Brenda Wallace.

But it wasn't the Brenda Karen remembered. Her hair was chopped short, dyed a cheap platinum blonde. Her face was gaunt, her eyes hollow, burning with a psychotic, feverish hatred.

"Brenda?" Karen whispered, reaching instinctively for the panic button concealed beneath the balcony railing.

"Don't touch it," Brenda hissed, pulling a small, silver syringe from her apron. "If you scream, if you move, I drop this tray. And the liquid inside these glasses isn't champagne, Karen. It's liquid ricin. I’ve already served three glasses to the VIP table. Your sister is sitting at that table, isn't she?"

Karen froze, her heart stopping completely. She looked down at the lawn. Her younger sister, Chloe, was laughing, chatting with Lorenzo’s associates, a half-empty champagne glass in her hand.

"You're insane," Karen breathed, terror gripping her throat.

"Lorenzo Rossi ruined my life!" Brenda snarled, her voice a cracked, demonic whisper. "He blacklisted me! I was evicted! I had to work in illegal underground clubs just to buy bread! I lost everything because of that stupid, broken little girl and you! Did you really think I wouldn't find a way back inside?"

Brenda stepped closer, the syringe pointed directly at Karen’s neck. "You're going to walk down there with me. You're going to tell Lorenzo to leave the gala and walk into the hedge maze alone. If you don't, I call my contact inside. He will detonate the explosives planted right under the stage where Mia is about to give her speech. You thought Lorenzo destroyed everything? He forgot to destroy me."

Karen looked at Brenda, then down at Lorenzo, then at Mia, who was walking up to the microphone on the stage below, holding a small piece of paper, smiling bravely.

The trap was perfect. If Karen screamed, her sister died of poison, and Mia died in an explosion. If she complied, Lorenzo would walk into an ambush in the dark maze.

Karen’s mind raced. She remembered everything Lorenzo had taught her about survival over the last six months. Never show fear to a predator. Find the blind spot.

"Okay," Karen whispered, lowering her hands, her eyes wide with simulated terror. "Okay, Brenda. Don't hurt them. I'll do whatever you want. Just... please, let me grab my shawl. It’s cold."

Karen turned slightly toward the outdoor sofa on the balcony, pretending to reach for a silk wrap. But instead, her hand slid into the hidden side pocket of the outdoor cushion—where Lorenzo kept an emergency, compact 9mm pistol for estate defense.

Her fingers wrapped around the cold steel grip.

"Hurry up!" Brenda snapped, stepping forward with the syringe raised.

Karen didn't hesitate. She whirled around, her face hardening into an expression that mirrored Lorenzo’s dead eyes.

BANG!

The gunshot was muffled by the heavy bass of the jazz band playing below. The bullet tore directly through Brenda’s right shoulder, shattering the bone. The syringe flew out of her hand, smashing against the stone floor. Brenda screamed, collapsing onto her knees, clutching her bleeding arm.

Below, the guards instantly reacted to the sound, drawing their weapons and moving into tactical formations. Lorenzo’s eyes snapped up to the balcony. He saw Karen standing there, holding the smoking gun, her green gown blowing in the wind.

Within seconds, Lorenzo, Marco, and a dozen armed men burst onto the balcony.

Lorenzo rushed to Karen, ripping the gun from her hand and pulling her into his chest. "Are you hurt? Did she touch you?"

"The champagne!" Karen gasped, pointing at the tray Brenda had dropped. "The VIP table! Brenda poisoned the champagne! And there are explosives under the stage!"

Lorenzo didn't waste a second. "Marco! Evacuate the lawn! Secure the stage! Silvio, get the medical team to the VIP table now! Analyze the glasses!"

The gala erupted into controlled chaos. Guests were rushed out by security while bomb techs swarmed the stage. Within ten agonizing minutes, Silvio returned, nodding to Lorenzo. "The poison was intercepted before anyone drank it, Boss. The bomb under the stage has been defused. It was a crude device. The contact Brenda mentioned was captured at the rear gate."

Lorenzo breathed a heavy sigh of relief, then turned his attention to Brenda, who was being held off the floor by two massive guards, weeping and bleeding.

"Please... please, mercy!" Brenda cried, her high-society delusions completely shattered. "Don't kill me! Don't kill me!"

Lorenzo walked over to her, his face completely devoid of humanity. He looked at her shattered shoulder, then up at Karen.

"What do you want to do with her, Karen?" Lorenzo asked softly. "She is yours to judge."

Karen walked over to Brenda. She looked down at the woman who had fired her, the woman who had tried to murder her family and a sweet, innocent child. Karen felt no pity. Only a cold, profound resolution.

"She wanted to see what happens when you bring fire to this family," Karen said, her voice steady and absolute. "Show her."

Lorenzo smiled, a dark, beautiful, lethal expression. He looked at Marco. "Take her to the basement. Make sure she lives long enough to regret every breath she took since she entered my boutique."

As Brenda was dragged away screaming, the balcony fell quiet once more. The moon shone brightly over the sprawling estate.

Lorenzo wrapped his arms around Karen’s waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. "You shot her without blinking," he murmured, his voice filled with an intense, burning pride. "You truly are a Rossi now, mia cara."

Karen turned in his arms, looking out over the city they now owned together. She had started as a broke sales associate, desperate to pay rent. Now, she was the queen of the dark metropolis, standing beside the devil himself.

"I told you, Lorenzo," Karen whispered, pulling him down for a deep, intoxicating kiss. "Nobody touches our daughter. And nobody destroys what we built."
