Chapter 5 - Shadows at the St. RegisHook: “When you spend years fighting the monster in front of you, you miss the devil standing right behind you.”The conservatory at the St. Regis was bathed in soft, amber light. Raindrops raced down the glass dome overhead, reflecting the neon lights of Manhattan below.

Evelyn walked through the quiet, glass-enclosed room, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. The restaurant was entirely empty; every table had been reserved under a private name.
At the far end of the room, sitting at a corner table beneath a towering palm, sat an elderly man sipping an espresso. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, a silver pocket watch chain visible on his vest.
"It has been a long time, Evelyn," the man said without looking up.
Evelyn stopped three feet from the table. "Richard."
Richard Sterling. Her father’s closest confidant, the former managing partner of Sterling & Hartwell, and the man who had executed her father’s will.
"Sit down, my dear," Richard said smoothly, motioning to the chair opposite him. "You look more like your mother every day. Unyielding. Cold. Magnificent."
"Where is she, Richard?" Evelyn demanded, remaining standing. "Why is my mother's name on accounts moving fifty million dollars out of my trust?"
Richard set his cup down, pulled a white silk handkerchief from his pocket, and gently dabbed his lips.
"Your mother is where she has been for fifteen years, Evelyn. Six feet under the earth in the family crypt in Greenwich."
"Then who reactivated Aegis Holdings?!"
Richard smiled softly—a smile devoid of warmth or remorse.
"I did."
Evelyn took a step back, her hand tightening around her clutch. "You... you stole from my family?"
"Stole?" Richard scoffed gently, as if explaining a simple math problem to a child. "Your father built an empire on promises he couldn't keep. When he died, the Hartwell Trust was empty, Evelyn. Completely bankrupt. He had lost everything on bad real estate ventures in South America."
"That's a lie," Evelyn whispered.
"It is the absolute truth," Richard said. "I saved your family name. I forged the financial statements, created fake asset portfolios, and built the illusion that the Hartwell Trust was worth billions. I gave you the status, the wealth, and the power you enjoyed your entire adult life."
"And Nathan?" Evelyn asked, her mind racing. "How does Nathan fit into this?"
"Nathan was an ambitious, stupid boy with a good face and no conscience," Richard chuckled. "I picked him for you. I arranged for you to meet him at that charity gala ten years ago. I knew he would steal, I knew he would lie, and I knew he would create enough corporate chaos to cover the shortfalls in the Hartwell accounts."
Evelyn felt the world tilt on its axis.
Her marriage... her entire adult life... her grand revenge at Aurelia... it was all engineered. Nathan hadn't ruined her life by accident. He had been placed in her life as a human shield for a financial crime that had begun fifteen years ago.
"You used him to siphon money out of Grant Dynamics to fill the hole in the Hartwell Trust," Evelyn realized, her voice trembling with rising fury.
"Precisely," Richard said, leaning back in his chair. "And you, my dear, played your part beautifully. By publically destroying Nathan and handing him to the FBI, you closed the case. The authorities think Nathan was the sole actor. The fraud ends with him. The Hartwell Trust remains pristine, rich, and untouched."
Richard stood up, straightening his cuffs, and stepped toward her.
"You win, Evelyn. You got your revenge on the cheating husband. You kept your money. Now, go home, keep quiet, and let the dead remain buried."
Evelyn stared at him, her chest rising and falling heavily.
Then, slowly, her lips curved into a dark, terrifying smile.
"You really don't know me at all, do you, Richard?" she said softly.
Richard’s smile faltered. "What do you mean?"
Evelyn lifted her left hand, adjusting the delicate pearl brooch pinned to her lapel.
May you like
Inside the pearl was a blinking blue light.
"I didn't come here to ask for answers, Richard," Evelyn whispered. "I came here to get you on tape."
