Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's DownfallHook: “When the glass castle shatters, even the architect gets cut by the shards.”The emergency shareholders' meeting of the Hartwell Trust was called at 4:00 PM in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel.

Richard Sterling sat at the head of the conference table, surrounded by twelve of Wall Street’s most powerful institutional investors, attorneys, and board members.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard said, his voice smooth, authoritative, and perfectly composed. "The recent tragic developments involving Mr. Nathan Grant have certainly shaken public confidence. However, as the managing trustee of the Hartwell Foundation, I assure you that our underlying assets remain entirely secure."
"Are they, Richard?"
The heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.
Evelyn walked in, flanked by Julian Vance and three senior investigators from the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
Richard’s eyes flickered, but he maintained his icy smile. "Evelyn. This is a private trustee meeting. You resigned from the investment committee three days ago."
"I resigned from your board, Richard," Evelyn said, stepping up to the foot of the long table. "I did not resign from my bloodline."
She tapped her tablet screen, and instantly, the massive LED screens mounted on the walls of the ballroom lit up with financial schematics, bank wire receipts, and recorded audio files.
Richard’s smile vanished.
"What is the meaning of this insolence?" Richard demanded, rising from his chair.
"This is the accounting record of Aegis Holdings," Evelyn announced to the room. "Over the last fifteen years, forty-two percent of the Hartwell Trust's dividend payouts were systematically diverted to Swiss shell accounts. Accounts controlled exclusively by Richard Sterling."
"These are fabricated documents!" Richard barked, looking at the board members. "She is a grieving, bitter woman whose husband just got arrested for corporate theft! She is mentally unstable!"
"Is this audio fabricated, Richard?" Evelyn asked calmly.
She pressed a button on her tablet.
The speakers surrounding the room burst to life with Richard’s clear, aristocratic voice, recorded just forty-eight hours prior at the St. Regis:
“I saved your family name. I forged the financial statements, created fake asset portfolios... Nathan was an ambitious, stupid boy... I used him to siphon money out of Grant Dynamics to fill the hole in the Hartwell Trust.”
The ballroom gasped. Board members turned to glare at Richard with looks of absolute horror and betrayal.
Richard stood frozen, his face draining of all color until he looked like a ghost standing in a room full of living men.
"You recorded me..." Richard stammered, his hand trembling as he reached for his phone.
"I recorded you, Richard," Evelyn said, taking three steps toward him. "And twenty minutes ago, the New York State Attorney General issued an emergency seizure of every asset tied to Aegis Holdings, your personal estates in Martha’s Vineyard, and your Swiss accounts."
Two state troopers stepped into the room, moving directly toward Richard.
"Richard Sterling," the lead trooper said. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and falsification of business records."
As the troopers forced Richard’s arms behind his back and clicked the steel cuffs around his wrists, the old lawyer looked at Evelyn with pure, unfiltered hatred.
"You think you've won, Evelyn?" Richard hissed as he was dragged past her. "You think you're free? You don't even know the real truth about your father! You don't know why he died!"
May you like
Evelyn didn't move a muscle.
"My father is dead, Richard," she whispered softly as the troopers led him out of the doors. "And now, your legacy is too."
