Chapter 4 - THE ARCHITECT OF RUINThe document on page forty-two was a signed contract between Harold Bennett, my runaway wife Vanessa, and a third mysterious entity listed only as Apex Holdings LLC.

It outlined the blueprint of my total destruction.

Three years ago, my construction firm had discovered a massive underground sinkhole network beneath the luxury beachfront towers we were developing in downtown Miami. Fixing it legally would have cost forty million dollars—enough to bankrupt the company. I wanted to halt construction and report it to the city engineering board.

My partners—led secretly by Harold Bennett, who sat on our board of directors—refused.

According to the documents in my hands, they quietly engineered a plan: siphon corporate assets into shadow accounts, frame me for gross negligence and financial fraud, force the company into involuntary bankruptcy, and then buy back the prime beachfront land for pennies on the dollar through Apex Holdings.

And Vanessa? Her role was to act as the internal spy, draining my personal accounts while sleeping beside me every night, collecting evidence to hand to federal prosecutors whenever the trap snapped shut.

They didn't just want my money. They wanted me destroyed, publicly disgraced, and legally silenced.

My phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was an unknown international number.

I swiped to answer.

"Edward," a smooth, distorted voice hissed through the speaker. "I see you found our little filing cabinet. Too bad your dear housekeeper is currently sitting in a holding cell downtown, taking the rap for millions in stolen federal assets."

"Harold," I growled, venom dripping from every syllable. "You're a dead man."

"Am I?" Harold laughed lightly, confident and untouchable. "Look out your front window, Edward."

I stood up, walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, and peered out into the rainy Miami night.

A fleet of black SUVs had blocked the driveway. Sirens wailed in the distance, drawing closer.

"The police are coming back, Edward," Harold whispered. "And this time, they have an arrest warrant with your name on it for masterminding the whole scheme. Enjoy your last few minutes of freedom."

The line went dead.
