Chapter 10 - The Queen’s Gambit

"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he was the only monster in the room."The grand boardroom of the Plaza Hotel in New York City overlooked Central Park, but the men inside weren't looking at the scenery. The remaining five bosses of the American Syndicate sat around a massive oval table, surrounded by thirty armed bodyguards.

Vincent and Nora walked in alone. No guards. No weapons.

Nora wore a breathtaking, blood-red floor-length gown, her shoulders bare, her neck adorned with the Moretti family crest necklace—a heavy piece of platinum and black diamonds. She held her head high, her hand slipped securely through Vincent’s arm.

"Moretti," Salvatore Lucchese said, tapping his fingers on the table. "You come to New York without an army? Bold move, considering you just executed Clara and Marco in Chicago yesterday morning. You left your home unguarded."

"I don't need an army to deal with men who rely on old women to do their killing," Vincent said smoothly, pulling out a chair for Nora at the foot of the table, directly opposite Salvatore. He remained standing behind her, his hands resting on her shoulders.

"You've disrupted the balance, Vincent," another boss, an old billionaire named Genovese, growled. "The Corretti territory is gone. Clara is dead. You’re holding the digital ledgers of every family in this room. You think you can blackmail the Commission?"

"I don't need to blackmail you," Nora spoke up, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the silent room.

The bosses stared at her, annoyed by her intrusion. "Speak when you're spoken to, girl," Genovese snapped.

Nora smiled—a cold, beautiful, deadly smile that caused Vincent’s fingers to tighten approvingly on her shoulders. She reached into her small clutch purse and pulled out a single, encrypted flash drive, tossing it onto the center of the mahogany table.

"That drive contains the complete transaction history of Project Phoenix," Nora said, her voice dripping with ice. "But it doesn't just show Clara’s involvement. It shows that three of the families at this table—Lucchese, Genovese, and Moretti’s own sub-factions—were co-conspirators in the murder of Anthony Moretti. You wanted the shipping ports split between you."

Salvatore laughed nervously. "So what if we did? You’re in our city now, sweetheart. You think you’re leaving this room alive with that information?"

"We aren't leaving with it," Vincent said, leaning forward, his dark eyes locking onto Salvatore’s. "Because twenty minutes ago, that identical dataset was uploaded to the cloud server of the Organized Crime Division of the FBI. Along with the live GPS coordinates of this exact room."

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Men stood up, chairs screeched against the floor, and bodyguards reached for their guns.

"You blew the whistle on yourself?!" Salvatore screamed, his face purple with rage. "You’ll go down with us, Moretti! You’ll spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary!"

"Will I?" Vincent mused, pulling a document from his jacket and sliding it across the table.

Nora looked up at the men, her smile widening. "The Moretti shipping ports, restaurants, and security firms were completely reorganized under a sovereign corporate trust registered in the Cayman Islands forty-eight hours ago. The legal owner of that trust isn't Vincent Moretti. It’s me. Nora Bennett. A woman with no criminal record, no family ties to the mafia, and a clean slate."

Vincent leaned down, kissing Nora’s cheek in full view of the panicking bosses. "The FBI has no case against Nora. And as for me... I’ve signed a full immunity agreement with the Department of Justice. In exchange for delivering the entire Commission on a silver platter, the Moretti family is officially clean. Legitimacy, Salvatore. The very thing my father died for."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the boardroom were blown off their hinges by flashbang explosions.

"FBI! Nobody move! Hands in the air!"

Dozens of tactical agents in body armor flooded the room, their weapons drawn. The bodyguards dropped their guns, realizing they were completely outmatched. Salvatore Lucchese and the other bosses were slammed onto the table, their hands forced into zip-ties.

As Salvatore was dragged past Vincent and Nora, he spit on the floor, his eyes wild with hatred. "You trapped us! You used a common street girl to build a trap for the whole Commission!"

Vincent didn't look at him. He adjusted his cuffs, his gaze fixed entirely on Nora, who stood up from her chair, completely unfazed by the tactical team clearing the room around them.

The lead FBI agent walked up to them, lowering his weapon. "Mr. Moretti. Miss Bennett. Your transport is waiting at the helipad. The city is yours. Clean."

"Thank you, Agent," Vincent said.

He offered his arm to Nora. They walked out of the chaotic boardroom, stepping onto the rooftop helipad where a private helicopter sat waiting, its rotors spinning, cutting through the misty New York night.

As the chopper lifted off, soaring high above the glittering lights of Manhattan and turning back toward Chicago, Nora leaned against Vincent’s chest. The storm had finally passed. The ninety days were long gone, replaced by a legacy that belonged entirely to them.

Vincent wrapped his coat around her, holding her tightly as the city shrank beneath them.

"Are you breathing normally now, sweetheart?" he murmured against her lips.

May you like

Nora smiled, looking out at the endless horizon of her new kingdom. "I forgot how to breathe the night I met you, Vincent. But right now... I’ve never felt more alive."

(The ninety days are over. The empire is clean. The king has his queen, and Chicago will never be the same again.)
