Chapter 5 - The Shattered Alliance

"The closest danger isn't the enemy outside your gates; it's the snake hiding in your bed."The following three weeks were a blur of high-tension silence. Nora stayed confined to the East Wing of the estate, her physical wound healing into a faint, thin scar on her neck, but her mental wounds remained wide open.
Vincent was rarely home. When he was, he spent his nights locked in his study or leaving at odd hours of the night. The war with the Corretti family was escalating. Nora learned from Clara that the Correttis had intercepted two of Vincent’s major shipping vessels at the port, claiming Vincent’s refusal to marry Isabella was a breach of an old treaty.
Despite her fear of his violence, Nora found herself worrying about him. She hated herself for it, but Vincent had saved her life. He had protected her when no one else would.
One rainy evening, Nora couldn't handle the isolation anymore. She walked down to the kitchen to make some tea. As she entered the darkened room, she saw a figure standing by the window, staring out into the storm.
It was Vincent. He had his shirt off, and Clara was standing behind him, carefully stitching a deep, bleeding gash across his shoulder blades. He didn't make a sound, his jaw clenched hard as the needle pierced his skin.
Nora gasped, catching their attention.
"Nora," Clara said, looking relieved. "Thank goodness. My hands are shaking tonight. Can you finish this? The boy refuses to go to a hospital."
Vincent growled, "She doesn't need to see this, Clara. Go to your room, Nora."
"No," Nora said, surprising herself with the strength in her voice. She walked forward, taking the needle and thread from Clara’s trembling hands. "I can do it. My mother was a nurse; she taught me how to sew wounds when we couldn't afford a clinic."
Clara nodded gratefully and slipped out of the room, leaving them alone.
Nora sat on the stool behind Vincent. The scent of copper and rain clung to him. She carefully cleaned the wound with antiseptic, noticing how his entire body tensed at her touch.
"Why do you do this?" she asked softly, gently pushing the needle through his skin. "You have millions of dollars. You could leave this life. You could go anywhere."
"You don't leave this life, Nora," Vincent said, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that resonated through her fingers. "My father tried to legitimize our businesses. He wanted to turn the Moretti name into a clean legacy. And for that, his own associates put a bomb in his car. I watched him die when I was eighteen. If I leave, the people who killed him win. The only way to protect the people I care about is to control everything."
Nora’s heart swelled with a strange, aching empathy. He wasn't a monster by choice; he was a monster created by necessity.
"Do you care about me, Vincent?" she whispered, the question escaping her lips before she could stop it.
Vincent went completely still. He slowly turned his head, looking at her over his shoulder. The distance between their faces was mere inches. "I brought you into my house to use you as a shield, Nora. That was the contract."
"And now?"
Vincent turned his entire body around, forcing her to step back. His dark eyes burned with an intensity that made her breath catch. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently cupping her jaw, his thumb brushing over the small scar Cameron had left on her neck.
"Now, if anyone tries to touch you again, I won't just kill them," Vincent murmured, his voice thick with a dark, dangerous emotion. "I will burn this entire city to the ground to keep you safe. You are no longer a shield, Nora. You are my weakness."
Before Nora could process his words, Vincent leaned down and captured her lips in a fierce, desperate kiss.
It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was possessive, demanding, and filled with the raw, chaotic energy of a man who lived on the edge of death every single day. Nora groaned softly, her hands flying to his chest, twisting into his shirt as she kissed him back with equal fervor. All the fear, all the tension of the past weeks melted away, replaced by an intoxicating, all-consuming passion.
He lifted her easily, setting her down on the marble kitchen counter, his body pressing flush against hers. For the first time in her life, Nora felt completely safe in the arms of a dangerous man.
But the moment of bliss was brutally shattered.
The heavy oak kitchen doors burst open. Marco stumbled into the room, his face covered in blood, holding a smoking pistol.
"Boss!" Marco shouted, coughing up blood. "We’ve been hit! The security gates... someone cut the main grid from the inside! The Correttis... they’re on the grounds!"
A sudden explosion rocked the foundation of the house, shattering the kitchen windows into a million pieces. Alarms began to wail, a deafening, shrieking sound that signaled the end of the peace.
Vincent instantly pulled away from Nora, his face transforming back into the cold, lethal commander. He pulled two pistols from the hidden holster beneath the counter, tossing one to Marco.
"Take Nora to the panic room in the basement, Marco! Now!" Vincent ordered, racking the slide of his weapon.
"No! Vincent, come with us!" Nora screamed, terror gripping her chest as the sound of heavy automatic gunfire echoed from the grand foyer.

"I have to end this tonight, Nora," Vincent said, looking at her one last time. There was no fear in his eyes—only a cold, burning promise. "Stay with Marco. I will come back for you."
Vincent turned and sprinted toward the gunfire, disappearing into the smoke and chaos.
