Chapter 2 - The Silent House and the Whispers of the Past

"When you sleep in a mansion built on blood, the ghosts don't use the doors."The Moretti estate was located deep within the gated enclaves of Lake Forest, hidden behind ten-foot stone walls and wrought-iron gates topped with security cameras. It was a sprawling, Gothic-style mansion that looked more like a fortress than a home.
Nora sat silently in the back of the limousine, staring out the window as the heavy gates clicked shut behind them. The sheer opulence was dizzying, a stark contrast to the cramped, mold-smelling studio apartment she had shared with Cameron, where every creaking floorboard had been a trigger for fear.
"You will occupy the East Wing," Vincent said, breaking the silence as the car pulled up to the grand entrance. "My private quarters are in the West Wing. You do not enter my rooms without permission. You do not speak to the staff about anything other than your daily needs. And most importantly, you do not touch my phone, my papers, or my safe."
"I don't care about your secrets, Mr. Moretti," Nora said, her voice tight. "I just want to survive."
"Good. Survival is an excellent motivator."
The car door was opened by a butler who looked like he had never smiled in his entire life. Vincent stepped out first, offering his hand to Nora with perfect, practiced chivalry. To anyone watching from the security control room, they looked like a powerful man and his treasured lover.
As they stepped into the grand foyer—a masterpiece of black marble, towering crystal chandeliers, and Renaissance paintings—an elderly woman with sharp grey eyes and a tailored black dress stepped forward.
"Vincent," she said, her tone crisp. "You brought a guest. Unannounced."
"This is Nora, Clara," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a respectful tone that surprised Nora. "Nora, this is Clara, my house mistress and my late mother's closest confidante. She runs this house. If she tells you to do something, you do it."
Clara walked slowly around Nora, her gaze scanning Nora’s ruined sneakers, her damp jeans, and the cheap canvas bag clutched in her hands. "She looks like a stray cat, Vincent. The Corretti family is already furious about the rumors originating from the Velvet Room. Bringing her here is an open declaration of war."
"Then let them bring war," Vincent said coldly. "Fix her, Clara. We have the Governor’s charity gala tomorrow night. She needs to look like a woman who deserves to sit at my right hand."
Clara sighed, her expression softening just a fraction as she looked at the exhaustion etched into Nora’s face. "Come with me, child."
Nora looked back at Vincent, but he had already turned his back, walking into a study lined with mahogany bookshelves and pouring himself a drink. He didn't look back.
Clara led Nora up a sweeping staircase and down a long, dimly lit corridor. The walls were lined with portraits of stern-faced men with the same dark eyes and sharp jawlines as Vincent. The Moretti lineage. A dynasty built on iron and blood.
"This is your room," Clara said, opening a heavy oak door.
Nora gasped. The room was larger than her entire past apartment. A massive king-sized bed with white silk sheets sat in the center, flanked by large windows overlooking a manicured courtyard. A roaring fireplace warmed the air, and a walk-in closet filled with designer dresses, shoes, and jewelry stood open.
"Vincent had this prepared?" Nora asked, bewildered.
"Vincent prepares for every scenario, Miss Bennett," Clara said, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper. "But you must understand something. This house is a cage, no matter how much gold covers the bars. Vincent is a man consumed by vengeance. His father was murdered three years ago by an insider within the Commission. He trusts no one. Do not mistake his protection for kindness. To him, you are a shield. The moment that shield stops working, he will drop it."
"I know," Nora said softly, looking down at her trembling hands. "But a golden cage is better than the grave Cameron was digging for me."
Clara looked at her for a long moment, a flash of genuine pity in her eyes. "Get some sleep, child. Tomorrow, your training begins."
That night, Nora lay in the massive bed, enveloped in luxury, but sleep refused to come. The silence of the mansion was louder than the club’s music. Every creak of the old house made her jump, expecting Cameron to burst through the door with his smooth, terrifying smile.
Around 3:00 AM, unable to rest, Nora slipped out of bed. She padded silently down the hallway, looking for the kitchen to get a glass of water. As she passed the grand staircase, she noticed a faint light coming from the half-open door of Vincent’s study.
Curiosity got the better of her. She crept closer, peering through the crack.
Vincent was sitting at his desk, his jacket off, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows. His chest and arms were covered in intricate tattoos—a sprawling mosaic of thorns, wolves, and a massive crest on his forearm. But what caught Nora’s attention was the large white map spread across his desk. It wasn't a city map; it was a layout of the Chicago shipping docks, marked with red X's.
Suddenly, Vincent spoke without looking up. "If you're going to spy on me, Nora, at least have the courage to walk into the room."
Nora froze, her breath catching in her throat. She slowly pushed the door open, her heart racing. "I... I was just looking for water."
Vincent raised his head. His eyes were bloodshot, filled with a dark, simmering intensity that made her want to run. "The kitchen is in the opposite direction. Don't play games with me."
"I'm not playing games," Nora said, stepping fully into the room. "I couldn't sleep. I'm not used to... peace."
Vincent studied her for a moment, his gaze softening by a fraction of a millimeter. He picked up a glass of water from a side table and slid it across the desk toward her. "Drink. Then go back to bed. Tomorrow, the world will be watching us, and if you flinch, we both lose."
As Nora reached for the glass, her hand brushed against his fingers. A sudden, electric jolt shot through her, hot and unexpected. She pulled back quickly, her eyes wide.

Vincent’s gaze darkened, his eyes dropping to her lips before returning to her face. "Go, Nora. Before I forget the rules of our little arrangement."
Nora didn't wait. She grabbed the glass and fled back to her room, her heart pounding for an entirely new reason.
