Chapter 5 - THE POISON IN THE VIAL

The revelation hung in the air between them like smoke from the dying fireplace. Viola’s mind raced, connecting dots she hadn't even realized were scattered on the board.
"The charity ball..." she breathed out, her eyes widening behind her dark glasses. "The bergamot note. It wasn't just overpowering the cedar by accident."
"No," Dante said, his hand coming up to rest lightly on her shoulder—the exact same firm, unpitying touch from the hotel hallway. "It was laced. A slow-acting neurotoxin, masked by high-grade citrus oils so it wouldn't trigger standard security chemical sniffers. It kills within forty-eight hours of continuous exposure, mimicking a massive stroke."
"And you knew," she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "You knew someone in your inner circle was trying to kill you, and you went to a public charity ball anyway?"
"I go where I need to go to draw them out," he replied smoothly. "And I found out something much more interesting than a traitor."
"Which is?"
"That my chief chemist, a man who has worked for my family for twenty years, was murdered in his workshop three hours after the ball ended." Dante's fingers tightened slightly on her shoulder. "His last communication before his throat was slit? An encrypted message to a competitor, stating that he had successfully delivered the formula to a blind perfumer as a 'blind drop' to throw off suspicion."
Viola froze, the blood rushing in her ears. "You think I am working with them? You think I'm an assassin?"
"If I thought you were an assassin, you wouldn't be standing in my library right now," Dante said, his voice deadly serious. "You'd be at the bottom of the cliff. But the men who killed my chemist believe you have the formula. They believe you know what was hidden in that bergamot."
Before Viola could process the sheer, terrifying magnitude of the danger she had accidentally stumbled into, a sharp, piercing alarm echoed through the stone mansion.
Red emergency lights flashed somewhere down the hall, casting an eerie, crimson glow against the walls. The sound of shattered glass and heavy gunfire erupted from the lower courtyard.
"They're here," Dante said, his body instantly shifting from calm conversationalist to lethal predator.

"Who?" Viola gasped, grabbing her cane as the reality of the situation crashed down upon her.
"The men who want the formula—and want you silenced permanently." Dante didn't hesitate. He grabbed her by the wrist, his grip iron-clad, pulling her away from the fireplace toward the back of the library. "Stay close to me. If you let go of my hand for even one second, you won't survive the next five minutes."
