Chapter 6 - BREAKOUT IN THE DARK

The heavy oak bookshelves at the back of the library didn't just hold books—they concealed a private panic room and escape tunnel carved deep into the limestone cliff. Dante punched a rapid sequence into a hidden keypad behind a leather-bound volume of Dante’s Inferno, and a section of the wall swung inward with a low, hydraulic hiss.
The air inside the tunnel was damp, smelling of wet stone and ancient earth.
"In," Dante ordered, shoving her gently past the threshold while pulling a compact, suppressed submachine gun from a concealed wall holster with his other hand.
"I can't see anything in there!" Viola protested, her chest tightening as claustrophobia threatened to overwhelm her.
"You don't need to see," Dante's voice cut through her panic like a blade. "Trust my voice. Grab the back of my jacket and don't let go."
She grabbed the heavy wool of his jacket, her knuckles turning white. Behind them, the massive library doors blew open with a deafening crash, splintering wood echoing through the room. Shouts in Italian rang out, followed by the terrifying, staccato rattle of automatic gunfire riddling the Persian rugs and leather armchairs.
Dante fired three precise shots back into the room, the noise deafening in the confined space, before pulling Viola deep into the tunnel and slamming the hydraulic door shut behind them. Pitch blackness enveloped them instantly—a familiar, suffocating dark for Viola, but one now charged with adrenaline, gunpowder, and mortal peril.
"Keep moving," Dante muttered, his hand reaching back to wrap securely around her smaller, trembling hand, guiding her forward through the uneven subterranean passage.
They ran for what felt like miles, the sound of their heavy breathing echoing off the wet stone walls. Viola's heels clicked frantically against the rock, her cane abandoned back in the library as her entire world narrowed down to two things: the heat of Dante's hand in hers, and the distant, muffled booms of explosions echoing from the mansion above.
"Where are we going?" she gasped, her legs burning with exhaustion.
"A private cove at the base of the cliff," Dante answered without slowing down. "I have a speedboat waiting. It's the only way out. The entire compound has been breached by rival syndicate enforcers."
"Rival syndicate? You mean the Moretti family?" Viola asked, recalling whispered rumors from her father's past business associates.
"The very same," Dante's voice grew hard as stone. "They want my ports, they want my routes, and now they think you hold the chemical blueprint that can destroy my entire empire from the inside out."

"I don't know anything about their stupid syndicate wars!" Viola cried out, tears of frustration stinging her eyes. "I just wanted to pay three months' rent!"
"Life," Dante said darkly as the tunnel ahead began to open up to the roar of the ocean, "rarely lets you stay neutral once you've smelled the blood in the room."
