Chapter 9 - THE BAIT AND THE TRAP

The basement of the Tuscan safe house was a makeshift laboratory. Viola had demanded specific ingredients—reagents she had memorized over a decade of working in the dark, compounds that could only be sourced through high-end underground channels, which Dante's loyal remaining loyalists had managed to smuggle in before dawn.

For twelve hours straight, the room smelled like a chaotic apothecary—sharp notes of crushed juniper, bitter almond, synthetic musk, and the unmistakable, clean backbone of aged cedar.

Dante stood by the doorway, arms crossed over his chest, silently watching her work. He didn't offer advice; he simply observed the absolute, terrifying precision of her movements. She didn't need eyes to measure the micro-droplets of a volatile ester. She measured by sound, by the microscopic differences in droplet viscosity, and by the infallible memory of her own olfactory nerves.

"It's ready," Viola announced finally, her voice tight with exhaustion as she sealed a small, lead-lined crystal vial with a wax stamp.

She held it out toward the space where she knew he was standing.

Dante stepped forward, taking the vial from her hand. His fingers brushed hers, sending a sudden, electric jolt up her arm. "What's in it?"

"To anyone else, it smells like an intoxicating, high-end bespoke leather and bergamot blend—irresistible, exactly what the Moretti syndicate would expect from a stolen formula," Viola explained, her tone clinical and sharp. "But to a specialized gas chromatograph or anyone tracking the specific isotope signature I baked into the synthetic musk, it leaves an invisible, un-washable vapor trail that glows under ultraviolet light for seventy-two hours. Wherever they take this vial, your men will find them."

Dante looked down at the small crystal bottle, a cold, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Brilliant."

"Now comes the hard part," Viola said, crossing her arms. "How do we deliver it to them without getting ourselves killed?"

"We don't go to them," Dante replied smoothly, pulling his encrypted satellite phone from his pocket. "We let them come to us."

Within twenty minutes, Dante had broadcasted a secure, encrypted signal across underground channels—a coded message letting the Moretti syndicate know that the blind perfumer was hoistered at an isolated estate outside of Florence, desperate to sell the formula to the highest bidder in exchange for safe passage out of the country.

The trap was set. Now, they waited for the wolves to smell the blood.
