Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trap ClosesRoss scrambled to the front door, pulling it open with a desperate, practiced mask of bewildered innocence.

“There must be some mistake,” Ross stammered, holding up his hands. “I’m a respectable corporate attorney. My wife—my estranged, unstable wife—has been threatening us for months. If you’re here about the custody petition—insurance officers, listen to me, she’s dangerous—”

“Save the courtroom speech for the judge, Mr. Hardy,” the lead federal marshal interrupted coldly, brushing past him into the foyer without waiting for an invitation.

Four armed marshals and two digital forensics agents poured into the house behind him. At the same time, two black SUVs pulled silently into the driveway, blocking both exits.

Gwendolyn came rushing down the grand staircase, her face flushed with panic. “What is the meaning of this? You cannot enter this house without local jurisdiction approval! I demand to see your warrants—!”

“Federal jurisdiction supersedes local family court mandates when national security assets, military personnel defamation, and interstate wire fraud intersect,” a sharp, crystal-clear voice echoed from the porch behind the agents.

The marshals parted ranks.

Corinne Hardy stepped through the front door.

She wasn't wearing civilian clothes. She was dressed in her full dress Class-A military uniform, complete with her Captain’s bars gleaming on her shoulders, service ribbons neatly pinned across her chest, and an expression so utterly devoid of mercy that both Ross and Gwendolyn staggered backward as if struck by a physical blow.

“Corinne?” Ross squeaked, his voice cracking into a high-pitched panic. “How... how are you here? You were supposed to be detained at the motel by the local police.”

“Local police take orders from local bribes, Ross,” Corinne said, her voice cutting through the silent foyer like a razor-sharp scalpel. She walked slowly toward them, her combat boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. “Federal investigators take orders from the United States Department of Defense.”

Gwendolyn’s hands flew to her mouth, her eyes darting frantically toward the hallway where the nursery was located. “You... you can’t do this. We have custody papers! The judge signed them—!”

“The judge hasn't signed anything yet,” Corinne said, stopping two feet away from her treacherous half-sister. “In fact, as of thirty minutes ago, Judge Harrison was placed under federal arrest for accepting unregistered corporate campaign contributions and obstruction of justice.”

Ross grabbed the edge of the hallway table, his knees visibly buckling. “This is insane. It’s a coup. You rigged the system—!”

“I didn't rig anything, Ross,” Corinne whispered, leaning in close so only he could hear the suppressed, trembling fury in her breath. “I just let you write your own confession.”
