Chapter 2 - THE SNAKES IN THE RED AND BLUE LIGHT

⚠️ 2:45 A.M. Fake Sirens and Real Bullets: The Trap is Sprung at the Redbird Diner"Get her up," Gabriel barked, his voice instantly reverting to the cold, tactical command of a mob boss.

Sadie frowned, her hand still resting on her knees. "What? The paramedics are outside. She needs oxygen, Gabriel. She needs a hospital."

"Those aren't paramedics," Gabriel said, grabbing his Glock from the floor and checking the chamber with a sharp, metallic clack. He reached down and scooped Chloe into his arms. She was still semi-conscious, her head dragging against his shoulder like a broken doll. "We have to move. Now."

"Are you insane?" Sadie stood up, her knees cracking. "You can't just carry a coding kid out into the rain! If she goes into arrest again—"

"If she stays here, she dies," Gabriel said, his eyes locking onto Sadie's. "And so do you. They saw you on the phone. They know someone called me. To them, you're a witness who needs to be deleted."

Sadie froze. The reality of her situation—the transition from a tired waitress wanting to clean the floor to a target in a mafia war—hit her like a physical blow. She looked at the blood on her apron, then at the gun in Gabriel’s hand.

"Oh, God," she whispered.

"The back door," Gabriel said, gesturing with his weapon toward the kitchen. "Does it lead to an alley?"

"Yes, but it’s locked with a padlock," Sadie said, her mind racing. "The key is in the register."

"Then get it," Gabriel said. "We have exactly thirty seconds before they walk through that front door."

They sprinted down the hallway. Gabriel carried Chloe’s weight with a desperate strength, his muscles screaming under the strain. Sadie ran ahead, her sneakers squeaking against the kitchen linoleum.

Behind them, the front glass doors of the diner shattered.

It wasn't the sound of someone knocking. It was the heavy, blunt impact of a tactical boot.

"Clear the booths!" a voice shouted from the front. It was a professional, military-grade voice, devoid of emotion. "Check the counter. Find the girl."

Sadie reached the cash register, her fingers scrambling through the drawer before wrapping around a heavy brass key. "Got it!" she yelled.

"Go!" Gabriel urged, keeping his body between Chloe and the kitchen doors.

They reached the heavy steel rear exit. Sadie jammed the key into the padlock. Her hands were shaking so violently she dropped it once.

"Sadie," Gabriel said, his voice deadly quiet as he stood with his back to the wall, his Glock pointed toward the kitchen entrance. "Do it now."

The padlock clicked open. Sadie threw the door open just as the swinging doors of the kitchen burst open.

A man in a dark tactical vest and a gas mask stepped through. In his hands was a suppressed submachine gun. He didn't ask questions. He raised the weapon, the red dot of his laser sight painting Gabriel’s chest.

Gabriel fired twice.

The heavy 9mm rounds struck the intruder in the center of his chest. The man stumbled backward, his weapon firing a wild, silenced burst that chewed into the industrial stainless-steel prep tables, sending a shower of sparks and grease into the air.

"Out!" Gabriel roared, shoving Sadie through the door first.

They tumbled into the rain-slicked alley. The cold water hit them like a bucket of ice, instantly soaking Gabriel’s sweater and Chloe’s thin clothing.

The black SUV was parked on the sidewalk around the corner, its engine still idling, headlights cutting through the gray downpour.

"Get in the back!" Gabriel ordered, opening the rear door of the SUV. He laid Chloe across the leather seat. "Keep her on her side. If she stops breathing, you know what to do."

Sadie didn't argue. She scrambled into the back seat, pulling Chloe’s head into her lap.

Gabriel slammed the door, ran to the driver's seat, and threw the vehicle into reverse. The tires screamed against the wet asphalt as he backed out of the alley just as two more armed men ran out of the diner's rear exit, their weapons firing a hail of lead that shattered the SUV's rear window.

The safety glass exploded inward, raining tiny, diamond-like shards over Sadie and Chloe.

Sadie screamed, tucking her body over Chloe to shield her from the debris.

"Hold on!" Gabriel yelled, slamming the vehicle into drive and flooring the accelerator.

The SUV surged forward, leaving the flickering pink neon of the Redbird Diner behind in a cloud of blue exhaust and burning rubber.
