Chapter 4 - THE IRON GATE FORTRESS

🏰 3:30 A.M. Behind the High Walls: The Safe House with a Medical SecretThe gates opened slowly, their heavy hydraulic arms groaning against the wind.

Gabriel drove the SUV up the long, winding driveway, lined with ancient pine trees that looked like dark sentinels in the storm. The house itself was a massive, modern structure of concrete and glass, sitting on a cliff overlooking the dark, churning waters of the Puget Sound.

The moment the vehicle stopped under the front portico, four heavily armed men in dark suits descended upon it.

"Boss!" Russo, the head of security, yelled, pulling the driver's door open. "Are you alright? Is the kid—"

"Get Dr. Chen down here now!" Gabriel roared, stepping out into the rain. "She’s in the back. She’s alive, but she’s in shock."

Russo didn't ask questions. He gestured to two of his men, who carefully lifted Chloe from the back seat, wrapping her in a thick, dry wool blanket.

Sadie stepped out after them, her body shivering violently, her wet uniform clinging to her skin. She looked at the grand entrance, the marble floors, the crystal chandeliers—all of it a stark, surreal contrast to the grease-stained walls of the Redbird Diner.

"You," Gabriel said, stopping her before she could follow the men. He took off his dry, heavy coat and threw it over her shoulders. "Come inside. You're freezing."

"I need to go home, Gabriel," Sadie said, her teeth chattering. "My shift ended an hour ago. The owner is going to find the diner destroyed. The police—"

"The police won't help you now," Gabriel said, his hand resting gently but firmly on her shoulder. "If the Rossis find you, you're dead. The only place in this city where you are safe is behind these gates."

He didn't wait for her to agree. He guided her through the massive glass doors into the warm, quiet interior of the house.

The basement of the mansion had been converted into a state-of-the-art medical clinic. It had its own generator, oxygen tanks, and a rows of stainless-steel cabinets filled with emergency drugs.

Dr. Chen, a quiet, middle-aged man with sharp eyes, was already working on Chloe. He had hooked her up to a cardiac monitor and was starting an IV line in her arm.

"What was the drug?" Chen asked without looking up.

"I found a syringe," Gabriel said, handing the plastic tube to the doctor. "And Sadie said she was drugged via a cup of coffee. A guy with a Rossi tattoo was with her."

Chen took the syringe, sniffing the tip before looking at Gabriel with a grim expression.

"It’s a synthetic peptide," Chen said. "A derivative of conotoxin. It paralyses the diaphragm, making the victim appear to die of sudden cardiac arrest. It’s nearly undetectable in a standard toxicology screen."

"Can you treat it?" Gabriel asked, his voice shaking.

"Now that she's breathing, yes," Chen said, starting a bag of saline mixed with an active charcoal agent. "But her heart was stopped for at least two minutes. We won't know the extent of the neurological damage until she wakes up."

Sadie walked over to the side of the bed, her hand reaching out to touch Chloe’s cold forehead.

"She’s going to be okay," Sadie said quietly. "Her pupils were responsive when we rolled her. Her brain was getting oxygen during the compressions."

Dr. Chen looked at Sadie, his eyes tracking the bleach stains on her uniform and the blood on her apron. "Are you a nurse?"

"I was," Sadie said, her voice dropping. "Before I lost my license."

Gabriel looked at her, his eyebrows rising. "You're a nurse? Why the hell are you working a night shift at a grease trap?"

Sadie turned her face away, her fingers tightening on the edge of Chloe’s blanket. "That’s none of your business, Mr. Finch. I saved your daughter. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to wash the blood off my hands."
